Do you breathe the name of your saviour in your hour of need
And taste the blame if the flavor should remind you of greed?

Rain wanted to follow the rules. That was all she ever wanted, really, that and to make beautiful music. As a young adult, she tried to be monogamous-she really did. But there was too much love in Rain’s heart for one person, and unfortunately her first love would prove to end her. Rain had been seeing someone for a few months when she tried to talk to him about her feelings for others-tried to talk, like a healthy couple should. But he would not listen. And that was when Rain realized how little she knew about him. She had no idea he was a mage, much less one powerful enough to do what he did to her. He cursed her, a curse that first filled her eyes with light so consuming that she could see nothing else. And then it flung her from the ground, her and the single egg that they had been nesting, and threw them past all breathable air and clear to the surface of Sornieth’s moon. The last words she ever heard from him echoed around her, telling her that if she or the unhatched baby ever breathed the air of Sornieth again, they would both turn to dust. Rain had thought she was going to die, but the moon was not as desolate as she had thought it would be. Several communities of the descendants of others who had, by some method or another, been cast from Sornieth. They took in the newly blinded Rain and the egg. It was several months before Rain could even speak again, and by then her son Pirouette had hatched. Pirouette was a good child, and he always went out of his way to take care of his mother. Even when his time was taken up by dancing, or caring for the endangered space whales, he always had time for her. When Silverdin and Dove came into Pirouette’s life, she welcomed them with open arms-and when she learned that Dove’s blindness was similar to her own, though caused by overexposure to light magic and not a curse, she finally felt as if she could connect with someone. Dove was able to convince her to try playing the harp again-after so many years. |
