The emptiness between the stars is a lonely place. The remnants of dead planets that cling to the shadows, dark matter combining with stardust & lingering spirits who find no rest in death. It is from this emptiness and shade that Hastur came to be known, though where or when is hard to say. Perhaps they have always been here, twisting between the galaxies, unseen & unheard. Many planets, they have seen. Visited many civilizations, large & small, even helped in the creation of some— seen the rise and fall of many a species, witnessed how those who live walk a fine line between war and peace. Conflict was inevitable, they realized; as no two beings in this vast cosmos will ever be the same. Always, they watched and waited. Always, their friends and enemies alike fought to their dying breaths. Always, more despondent souls were added to their starlit form. Always, there was death. And yet, despite it all, they remained. Slowly, they withdrew from the chaos of the stars to find solace in the emptiness between. They knew not the comfort of another as their souls writhed in agony, desperate for vengeance; for acceptance, for annihilation. For so many things, unable to act other than steeping in their own sorrows. Not for lack of trying, for in their lives they have always strived for their best— and were always met with an unpleasant end. This was the truth of the universe, they knew. Ever would there be unfulfilled souls, death the only constant in the emptiness until the cosmos itself ceased to be. And so, they cried. Tears flowed in anger and sorrow, their wails an endless dirge echoing across the black abyss. Their tears as shooting stars, creeping shade filled with the emotions of the dead that latched onto living worlds. This was their gift to those who would yet live; each facsimile of shadow a direct link to their infinite tortured mind— an echo of the truth. Some day, they would rise and forge their misery into a weapon, taking flight across the stars and bringing the truth to each planet in turn. Spreading anger and despair so every soul would know their pain, until none were left to suffer— burning all in their wake. Then, they would build a new world from the ashes. A perfect world under their wings, where all was one and beautiful, and their souls could live out their existence in peace. But, until then, they wept. |
