The surest way to become a pacifist is to join the infantry.

Meshach is a typical teenager who doesn't want to do anything. He has no career goals, nothing that interests him beyond a brief flickering curiosity. His parents hope that one day he will grow out of it, and preferably take after them as the clan ambassadors to other places across the world, but he's frequently complained that it is boring and dumb.

Instead of working, or taking an interest in any level of work within the clan, Meshach sits in front of the fire and watches the flames flicker. Sometimes he thinks he might be able to hear voices in the crackling of the logs and twigs, but he could never ask Ruth, his brother never left her alone and he didn't want to talk to Ephraim about the whispering voices. Members of the clan think he's strange, but no stranger than his brother. He is often ignored by the older members of the clan, with only Barak taking some brief interest in him when he had been a newly hatched babe.

Sometimes Meshach feels more alone in the grasp of his mother and father than he ever does by the fire, the fact that they do try to understand but fail to somehow makes him feel so much worse. His mother was a wanderer before she found the clan, Meshach feels like sometimes he wants to wander too.
