In life, Koran tinkered with the forces of life and death. When she died, she found herself stuck on the material plane, unable to pass on. She'd been a railroad engineer in life, the bringing back of the dead only a side hobby. She tried to keep that occupation in death but no town would have her. A bad omen, they'd call her. They'd drive her out of town with bullets that passed through her body harmlessly but still left her scared out of her mind. She lost her old friends and never managed to make new. That was, at least, until Jesse came along, riding into her heart like a wildfire. She'd always been on the side of the law in life, but when the law wants you gone, who in their right mind would stick to it? She fell in love with Jesse, with her dirty tongue and smoking gun barrel, in the way that she pauses at night to stare at the sky, her eyes reflecting the light of the distant stars. The only one she can't kill, Jesse jokes to her as they curl up at night at a campfire, sometimes alone, sometimes with Jesse's latest posse. Koran is just corporeal enough to cuddle. She stares up at the stars with Jesse and wonders why they didn't take her. The beating heart of the dragon next to her answers her question: her mission on earth wasn't over yet. |

What her purpose is now, she isn't sure. Maybe it's to teach Jesse to have a heart. Maybe it's to make up for the lifespans she'd tampered with. That purpose doesn't matter to her, not yet. She fears the day Jesse dies. She fears the day she continues her walk on the dusty earth alone.
