The small gold artifact seemed simple at first. Foreign letters were etched on the edge of its finely polished surface. Was it a mirror? A piece of jewellery? There was a different word on the other side, and a faint tarnish in the centre. I had reached to brush the dirt away then... If only I had known. The relic unfolded with a jade flash and the brown taint erupted outwards, consuming the disc. Consuming my flesh. As I burned and screamed, others rushed to my aid. But the ruin was huge now. It thickened into a tentacled mass and shattered their helpless bodies.

I led the entire team to their deaths. What came after that? Why was I saved?

I climb to the top of the quarry. Although the wind is completely still, I see the last of a brown fog blow swiftly out of sight. The ruin! It must not spread any further. It needs to be stopped. Perhaps that is what I am here for...
