A hulking stone golem tugged up from within the earth by a warlock, basalt is not capable of much sophisticated thought, much less speech, which he has no capacity for. He does, however, have a strange affinity for emotion, considering his original purpose was that of a bodyguard to his summoner. After the warlock was slain by one of her enemies, the magic holding his stone form together should've dispersed - and yet, here he is. Since his summoner had need of physical strength and protection, he was brought into being as a guardian, which is the core of his clan's theory about his continued existence. The others believe his core magic hasn't dissipated because he hasn't completed the search for his charge. Though he isn't technically a real dragon, he currently embodies the spirit of a guardian, so it's possible that a hiccup in the spell that brought him forth from within the earth's crust could perpetuate his existence after his master's death and, subsequently, the breaking of the contract that empowered him to take this form.
