F R A I S E

r e m e d i e s

The sign is faded, the windows dirty. Remedies, the store offers, but the locals rarely go inside. Sometimes a curious visitor stops in, looks around, leaves. The shop itself is dusty and dim, like a toy that's been thrown around and long-since forgotten. Various potions, herbs and curiosities line tilting shelves. The counter is, typically, unmanned.

Except for when someone truly desperate comes in.

The requests are varied. "I want to fly faster." "I want my plumage to be brighter." "I want to raise the dead." Heh, raising the dead. The shopkeep refuses such requests, of course. Folly.

One day a youngling comes in, looks around, seems undeterred by the breathless air in the store. Spends time looking at this vial, that vial, dead beetles and dried fish labeled "ingredients" for some unknown magics. Finally, when it seems he won't go away, the shopkeep sighs and walks out from the back of the store to the counter. She wears feathers and skulls and bones and jewelry and lights and none of it belongs. "I can't give you what you desire," she states, and then walks out. The youngling hangs around for a bit and leaves.

But he comes back. The next day, the next. Her answer is the same every time. Finally he speaks up before she can - "I want to make someone love me." The shopkeep chuckles. "You don't want that. Find someone else the natural way." "But you can, can't you?" She takes a long look at him, her eyes inscrutable behind her mask. "Remedies like mine take as much as they give. Sometimes more. Now be off."

But he doesn't understand. He doesn't understand what that means, or what love is. He pesters and pesters and one day she gives him a beautiful glowing flower. "You'll regret this, you know," the shopkeep casually warns him. He dashes off and gives the flower to his object of affection and her eyes light up just like the flower. Where before she had shown no interest in him, now she follows him around, gives him compliments. And as soon as this happens, he tastes ashes in his mouth. For he feels nothing. No spark of love or kindness, no compassion, nothing.

He leaves her behind. He'll find someone else. Except he never does. You can't make someone else love without giving something of yourself up.

HATCHLINGS IN RADIANT STAR
a small primer for those interested in lore

Clan of the Radiant Star makes its home on a sky island floating above the Windswept Plateau in the volatile Twisting Crescendo. The island has modern amenities for both visitors and its own dragons, including a bustling merchant area, serene botanical gardens, a library and research facilities, and more. However, there is also untamed wilderness beyond.

Hatchlings in Radiant Star have free run of the place, and what they end up doing depends on their interests. However, all are encouraged to see the greater world, so young dragons often leave when the various visitors to the island do, or simply jump off into the wild winds and see where fortune takes them. Most Radiant Star hatchlings have an uncanny ability to know where their home is at any time, which makes for diplomatic relations between clans much easier once a Radiant Star member has joined them.
