I love the Mirrorlight Promenade, but i gotta go. I don't know what, but something is calling me, and i need to find out what.

- - - - ▢ ItachiUmbreon (#22917, Water)
Growing up is never easy, but especially so for a hatchling on the road. Having left his home lair mere hours after birth, the young hatchling was in serious trouble. Unaware of the dangers though, Monty marched on. After the first night, Monty launched himself unsuccessfully at nearby insects. His increasing hunger both drove him forward and sapped him of his strength. Soon, the young hatchling collapsed from sheer exhaustion and starvation.

"Oh dear!" a voice called out. A purple Pearlcatcher had been passing by when she spotted the small Guardian limp on the ground. She quickly rushed over and checked him for life. The smallest of breaths left the hatchling's body and Morrigan knew the young one was in dire straits. So she scooped him up and rushed him back to her clan. The next few days blurred by as Morrigan took special care of little Monty. Once Monty was back on his feet, he was allowed to play with the rest of the clan's hatchlings. There, Monty spent the rest of his hatchling days.

As an adolescent, Monty once again felt that fierce desire to discover what was calling him. A wave of sadness suddenly overcame him. Coral Cove had become his home. He hardly remembered what his original lair or parents were like. He had left them so soon after all. Perhaps his (surrogate) mother Morrigan would know something about what was calling him. With that in mind, he went to her and explained how he felt.

Morrigan was quiet for a long time. She had known this day would come, but hadn't imagined that it would come so soon. She forced herself to focus on Monty's inquiry and pondered it for a moment more. She took a deep breath to calm herself before she finally spoke. "Monty, you are a Guardian. Perhaps what is calling you is the urge to discover your charge so that you may be recognized as an adult and a true Guardian. All Guardian dragons go through this process."

Monty blinked for a moment. It was true what she said. He had heard of such a thing happening for other Guardians. Still, he wondered if that quest was indeed what called to him. Could it be possible so soon after hatching?

"Mind you it's only a rumor, but I have heard of special dragons who have heard this call so soon after birth." Morrigan said. It was as if she had read his mind! Or perhaps, she just knew him that well. "The legends speak of a Guardian by the name of Perdicus who did just as you did, young one. He left his clan merely hours after birth and commenced his journey to discover who he was meant to protect. He was faced with three trials. The trials themselves have unfortunately been lost to time, but all agree that the Gods gifted him greatly after the success of each trial."

"What did the Gods gift him?" Monty asked, eagerly.

Morrigan smiled knowingly. "I can tell you not, little one. If you like, you'll simply have to take the journey and discover it for yourself. I will help you pack."

- - - - ▢ RoxySantana (23143, Shadow) - Trial of Secrets
Monty had traveled north leaving the Sea of a Thousand currents behind him. Below him, the mist and shadows of the Tangled Wood loomed ominously. He was not sure what pulled him here. At first, he had believed that the force that was calling him was taking him back to his birth clan in the Mirrorlight Promenade, but now however, with the Sunbeam Ruins to the east, he was being pulled away from the lightning and further into the shadows. He glided low over the forest, his clawed feet just inches over the treetops. He was going to land, the unknown call telling him to go down among the trees.

A clearing opened up beneath him like a great scar on the landscape. The Guardian’s great wings carried him over it in seconds but with a few flaps he was circling back around. He descended into the clearing, his wing beats sending small glowing particles into the air. As he touched down upon the soft grass, his wings fidgeted as he folded them neatly along his sides. He lowered his head and craned his neck to look at his surroundings.

The darkness seemed to cling to the very air, shifting and twisting in the deep fog that blanketed the ground. Glowing mushrooms and moss cut through the shadows with a dim organic light. Monty’s eyes soon adjusted to the darkness. A pair of fireflies danced through the clearing, coming right up to the large dragon’s nose. The Tangled Wood was pleasant, beautiful even, with the soft glow of bioluminescence from the flora and fauna.

Monty took a few moments to admire the beauty of the Tangled Wood before he took his first steps out of the clearing. He passed under the canopy of the ancient trees, following what looked like a path through the forest. More fireflies danced around him, some even alighting on the young dragon as he passed. He was glad for their company, their aerial antics and streaks of light brought a smile to his face.

The woods seem to grow darker around him as he moved along the path. The mushrooms grew smaller here, and the moss was less common. The trees shifted from being full and healthy to thin, leafless, twisted skeletons of what they once were. Despite the absence of leaves, Monty could not see the sky above him. Blackness and intertwined branches hung above him making him feel as if he was in an enclosed space. He shrunk low to the ground as he practically crawled under an archway of branches. Where was this path leading him?

The path opened up into another clearing. A heavy fog shrouded the trees beyond in a veil so thick; all Monty could see beyond were two blue flames in the distance. As he stepped into the clearing, his firefly companions wheeled away back into the trees. He watched as they soon darted off in different directions; this was as far as they would come. He turned back to look across the clearing, and with a deep breath walked toward the blue flames.

Within moments, the Guardian could not see his own feet in the dense fog. He felt lost, trapped, and frightened. The only landmarks to guide him were the bright flames, a marker on a hidden path. As Monty approached the flames, the fog began to dissipate. He could soon see the twisted trees again, and the empty blackness beyond the branches. When the last wisp of mist cleared, a huge wall of dead branches stood before him. A path was cut through the wall and beside it, something hung from the trees. It was a large structure that looked very much like the nest of a weaver bird. It was made of long intertwined branches and had a large opening in the front. On either side, large braziers hung glowing with blue flame.

Monty approached the nest, and jumped back when something moved within. A pale birdlike face that looked like a skull crowned with feathers extended from the darkness. It was followed by a long dark neck and bright mint rosette wings. All of these things made up a dark Skydancer that seemed to wear her skeleton painted on her skin. She descended gracefully from the nest, her eyes locked on him. As she sized him up, her neck wiggled, much like an egret targeting its meal.

“I see you have finally come,” the Skydancer’s voice chimed like little bells. “I was beginning to wonder what was taking you.”

Monty blinked, his head retracting back in surprise. She knew he would come to this place? How? He had not even known where or to what he was being called to. He moved cautiously toward the Skydancer, curiosity getting the better of him. She watched him with a bemused expression, a smile on her narrow face.

“You must be wondering how I knew you would come, Monty,” she said with amusement. “My clan’s fortune teller informed me you would arrive to walk the Trial of Secrets.”

“The Trial of Secrets?” Monty asked.

The Skydancer circled him, laughter chiming in the darkness. She moved gracefully toward the path entrance that cut through the wall of branches. She waved a delicate hand and more braziers ignited with blue flames. They lit the dark path and Monty could see that only a few feet beyond the wall, the path forked. His eyes widened. It was not a path through the woods, it was a maze.

“Every dragon is surrounded by secrets. They flow and shift over us unseen like air. This place is where all the secrets gather; where truth and lies intertwine like threads. If you are to face the truth, you must first follow the threads. The labyrinth before you holds answers, but take caution for the Trial is not without challenges. You will see things: things that you will never be able to explain, things that may haunt you for the rest of your life. You may enter the labyrinth when you are ready,” she explained.

Monty looked from the Skydancer to the ominous labyrinth before him. He wondered what had happened for his life to take this turn. This was not what he had expected on his journey. Still, the Skydancer had said that the labyrinth would hold answers for him. Perhaps it would tell him where his journey would lead. He took his first steps into the labyrinth, and began his trial.

Time passed as he moved through the tight passages. He was trying desperately to remember the path he had taken so that he could find his way back. Left, left, right, left, right, left? Or was it right, left, left? Already Monty feared that he had lost his way in this cursed maze. What had the Skydancer meant by see things? So far, all he had seen were endless walls of dead branches, miles and miles of endless walls of branches. He snorted, the first sound he had made in this labyrinth. This was insane; maybe there was nothing in here, no answers, no point to this whole thing, just a maze.

He had come to another fork, another decision of either left or right. He stood for a moment, irritated at how he felt as if he was going nowhere. Then the cry of a baby dragon echoed through the maze. Monty’s head snapped toward the left, the direction of the cries. His decision was made and he charged off toward the baby. As he grew closer, he could hear voices, whispers in the branches.

“Where did you get that thing?”

“He is our son! Hatched from out nest!”

“Our son? Do you think Stormcatcher would give our son those red eyes? This is a plague child!”

“He hatched from our nest!”

“Look at our hatchlings, do you really believe he is ours?”

Monty made another sharp left and skidded to a halt. A nest lay at his feet. Four small, newly hatched dragons wiggled among the cracked remains of their egg shells. Three of the hatchlings were small Imperials, their skins in shades of reds and eyes the bright electric blue of lightning flight. The last hatchling was a Guardian, gray and speckled, a bright orange crackle covering his body. While the Imperials all wailed and screamed for attention, his cries sounded like that of a goose, a loud honking. It took Monty a moment to realize that this hatchling was himself. He stared in awe at the image of himself in the nest. He looked up from the nest where the shadow of an Imperial and a Nocturne towered over him. It was as if he were a hatchling looking up at two full grown dragons, unable to make out their features. The two shadows continued to argue.

“I will not have him here!”

“He is only a baby!”

“He is not my baby!”

The deafening boom of an Imperial’s roar shook the very ground. Monty cowered before the shadow, and as he watched, so did his hatchling self. The honking stopped, and the nest below him faded. The tiny dragon was curled into a small ball; little whimpers escaped him as he trembled in fear. The Imperial roared again and the little hatchling bolted, tripping over himself as he ran in terror. Monty turned and ran after himself, trying to stay with the hatchling. He followed the sound of honking as the newborn called for help. He chased it through the maze, just keeping it in sight. As he grew closer to it, the hatchling seemed to slip over an edge. The honking was desperate now, pleading for rescue. Monty could hear the sound of running water. He skidded to a stop at the edge of a fast flowing river. The hatchling was a few feet downstream clinging to a rock. It honked loudly, fear echoing in its voice. Then, tiny claws slipped from stone and the water carried it away. Monty jumped forward wanting desperately to save himself, but the river vanished and he came down on soft mossy grass. He turned, confused and frightened, spinning around in place. When he opened his mouth, it was not the honk of a hatchling but the rumbling roar of a young adult Guardian calling for the hatchling.

Silence answered him and after a few moments he began to calm. Realization washed over him like the cold sensation of a rushing river. He had seen the past, a secret he had hidden from himself all this time. He was not the son of some Light clan, perhaps he had even made up the name of the clan he believed he had come from. Lies he had told himself to cover the frightening truth. Still, he wondered now, where had he really come from? He turned back to look around, another fork, another choice.

It felt as if hours had passed since he had relived the first few moments of his life. The tension still held him, making him ache with wariness. The events had shaken him to his core, dulling him to the world around him. His tail dragged on the ground as he trudged on: another right, another left, endless walls. He wanted to be out of this maze, wanted to go home, where ever that actually was. As he turned at another fork not caring which way he was going now, the whispers started again.

“Another nest, another one Citrine!”

“I heard, four eggs.”

“Plaguebringer, watch over us.”

“They will find the monster doing this.”

“Before he crushes another nest?! What if the next one is ours?”

“It will not be!”

“But what if it is?!”

Dominic! Do not panic on me! There is enough going on and if you panic, I don’t know what I will do!”

“We must do something!”

“What? What would you have us do?”

“I…I don’t know.”

Another nest appeared before Monty, this one made of rot and bones. Three green eggs rested within. A dark shadow of a female Guardian with blood red eyes curled around the nest. A Wildclaw shadow stood before her, moving nervously from one foot to the other. Monty could feel their tension even now. This was another secret from his past, these were his birth parents. The image faded and changed to that of the Wildclaw tending to the nest alone. The Wildclaw chirped and cooed at the eggs lovingly as he nudged and turned them. There was a softness to the moment; a loving father with his young. The moment was ruined however, as a mournful wail echoed in the distance. The Wildclaw’s head shot up, the spined crest raising along the back of his head. Even without his father saying anything, Monty knew another nest had been destroyed; more young lives ended before they could begin. Dominic rose, his long sickle shaped claw tapping on the stone beneath his feet. He seemed to be thinking about something as he stared toward the entrance of the lair. Then, in a second, he turned and grabbed a satchel off the ground. He padded it with soft fabric and feathers that lay around the lair, then carefully scooped up the three eggs and placed them in the bag.

“We shall get away from here. I’ll get you somewhere safe.”

He placed the satchel over his shoulder and walked to the entrance of the lair. Monty followed him, watching as his father ducked low and avoided the sentries. Within moments, his father was running and Monty was pressed hard to keep up. As Monty turned at a fork, his father faded from view, and he was alone again in the labyrinth. That was where he had come from, a father who had loved him and wanted nothing more than to protect him. He had been saved from death only to face it again in the river. Monty moved on down the path until he reached another fork.

"Monty."

The voice drifted on the wind, so familiar. He followed it, the feeling of home coming to him. He remembered dragging himself from the water. He remembered spending that first night in the cold and hunting the insects to eat. Then she found him, his mother. Morrigan, the Pearlcatcher that had named him, and raised him to be what he was today. A wave of homesickness washed over him.

"Monty."

The voice called again. He rushed forward charging through the maze to get to her. She was his home. He still had a journey to go on and something he was meant to find to be his charge, but he wanted to see her. He slid under a low hanging branch and scrabbled right at a fork. The walls suddenly opened up and he found himself in a clearing lit by blue flames. The Skydancer from the entrance was back, now accompanied by floating candles. The sky above was lit by stars and moonlight. He had made it through the labyrinth.

“Congratulations Monty, you have completed your first trial,” she said. “Now come forward to receive your reward.”

Monty moved forward out from under the trees. As he did, the orange crackled pattern on his skin shifted into skeletal shapes much like the Skydancer’s. This would be the reward for completing the Labyrinth, for escaping death. While he had not found his charge, he knew this was only the beginning and there was much more to come. He soon left the Tangled Wood behind under the pale moonlight. His appearance and life forever changed by the Trial of Secrets.

Uh-oh, looks like this fiery guy wandered a little too far from his home lair (22917 - ItachiUmbreon), and now he's off to see the world! If ever you feel the need to exalt, he'd really appreciate it if you could just return him to the home lair, or to the 'Dragons Off To See The World' thread, here. This is not necessary, but he would be very grateful!
