  His volatile magic tore at his fragile form from within, threatening to tear him asunder at any given moment. Few expected him to survive infancy. No one expected him to reach adolescence. Zeph spent his childhood under the constant care of medics who monitored his unstable vitals, isolated from the world outside his sterile chambers, waiting. Waiting. Waiting for his erratic heartbeat to slow. Waiting for his breathing to grow shallow, too shallow to maintain consciousness. Waiting for his inevitable death.

But Zeph didn't die. Zeph defied all expectations, and his frail health gradually stabilized. Never enough to ever compare to the robust constitution of his peers, but just enough to leave the confines of his bedroom and, for the first time in his life, taste the air, feel the wind's caress, allow unfiltered sunlight to touch his skin.
