Elderkin is rather sickly and physically weak. As such, she's unable to travel far from the lair. Soma and Zira take turns caring for her on bad days when she can barely move because of the ache in her joints and in her heart. She knows she's nearing the end of her life and must soon leave the clan or risk putting them all in danger, but she refuses to give up so easily.

She sends a letter to her mate in the Hewn City every week, with little poems and drawings detailing her love. Sometimes she gets letters back, stuffed with flowers which she then carefully presses into a book to keep forever.

Valentine's arrival in the clan filled Elderkin with anxiety -- the skydancer looked far too young for a dragon who is supposedly much older than Elderkin herself. She's convinced Valentine is harboring some secret to prolonging a dragon's life, something Soma is still trying to convince her is folly.
