Magic is her first love. She remembers little of her youth, but in the haze of memory she does recall shimmering scrolls, dazzling illusions, spellwork rushing through her blood. This gift has been with her since birth, and she cannot imagine herself or her life without it — to be without magic would be akin to being without a spirit, or a soul. Little else has been so constant in her life. Sorcery is as comfortable and familiar to her as the guiding light of the stars, and so it is only sensible that she should settle somewhere that she can take full advantage of her abilities, strive to push herself even further, explore her abilities in depths she has never plumbed before. At first she is wary of her mentor, because his interests are somewhat different from her own, because he is interested in fixing things and she is interested in making them transform. But they come to a cautious middle ground, in those early days of her apprenticeship, and they fall into an easy companionship with one another. He understands her affection for alchemy far better than he lets on, and in turn she has a greater respect for his healing arts than she had previously thought possible. Although he puts his skills to use doing good for the sake of others, his tongue is just as sharp as hers, and together they are a relentless pair, cutting and acerbic in their scorching wit yet endlessly gentle in the kindness that they do on occasion proffer. She is careful, though, to keep herself separate from him in some fashion. To ensure that she remains distinct. To make it known that she is more than the healer’s apprentice. The very thought of codependency prickles at her skin, needles at her thoughts, an ever-present worry. But she is well and truly her own being, in more ways than she lets on. Her raw talent, and the effortlessness of her grace, color her with a poise that Aeloith could never possess. And her exploration of magic, too, is far more ambitious. Carries far more risk. She grows tired of parlor tricks, and so she searches the underbelly of magic for the power that she seeks. Aeloith knows this, of course. He does not condone her behavior, exactly, but he knows that at very least she would never use her newfound abilities against him, and he supposes that this is all he can hope for. Because although she carries herself with an air of elegance, of beauty, of grace, there is something lethal that lurks underneath, a steely resolve to achieve her own ambitions, no matter the cost. So although he is her mentor, and although he attempts to instill in her a sense of caution, he suspects that she might have become a little bit reckless, these days. A little bit too confident in her own potential. And he would be right. |
