DBL4.png When Marlys was hatched, he didn't have parents to call his own. He always saw the other hatchlings with their parents, playing or whatever it was at the time. And it made him quite sad, for he didn't have any family other than himself. Of course, when he'd go to school everyday he'd get bullied by the ones that had the richest families and say thing things like "Get out of my way parentless" or he'd get beat up a lot as well. But his hide was so dark, that it would easily hide the bruises that happened from the school bullies. He'd come to the healer's den and get healed every time, but the nurse saw nothing on his black and blue hide, but she always thought something was wrong considering the amount of times Marlys wandered into the healer's den.
BY LADYSHADOW
DBL4.png One day after school, Marlys decided to go a different way back to his home clan, and he stumbled across the Tangled Woods, which was home to the deity of the Shadowbinder. Though of course at the time, he didn't know that, for he was just a young kid. He didn't know of the stories that were passed down from generation to generation about how things in the Tangled Woods would trick you, or even curse you. The Ridgeback stumbled across a small pool in the center of a glade, where everything was calm and tranquil. Though he stumbled across the small secret glade by accident, he felt like he was disturbing a greater entity while he was there.
Time passed by while the dragon was in the forest, and since he had no family to go back home to, he just decided to stay a little while longer in the forest glade. Eventually, Marlys was tired enough that he decided to sleep the rest of the night, and he'd make his way back to his clan in the morning. Thankfully, the next day was a weekend so he wouldn't miss any school from his little outing in the forest. The next day came as the sun reached the highest point in the sky with it reaching even the farthest points of Sornieth. Which is why the Ridgeback was so rudely awakened by the sun hitting him in directly in the face.

"Five more minutes..." He grumbled out, but the sun was as persistent as it could be, and almost seemed to mock him, like everything else in his life. "All right... all right I'm up... blasted sun.." He muttered, standing up from his slumber, and shaking the sleep off of him. He immediately had a bad feeling ran up his spine as a ghostly chill ran through the air. Marlys also noticed that where he slept was not the same place. The glade that he slept in was no longer with him, it was almost as if the glade itself moved without him and left him stranded.
"Show yourself! I know you're there!" The dragon shouted, getting in a bad attack form for whatever was going to attack him. Thankfully, his executed form was not needed for he was surprised to see that it was only just a cat.
More so it was a black cat with intelligent green-yellow eyes. The cat padded over to Marlys and began to purr⸺quite loudly at the dragon, demanding attention from him. The black and blue Ridgeback complied and started giving the said cat the attention it wanted.
"Mm... maybe, you're like me.." Marlys comments, noticing how thin, frail, and smaller that the cat looked compared to the bigger and healthier looking cats he's always seen. "Do you also have no one to go back to?" He asked, but the cat only just continued to purr.
"Whatever the case is, I think whatever happened to you in the past is over. We have each other now." Marlys said to the cat, picking the black cat up and placing him on his head. "Though we both have nowhere to go, we might as well go back to my place, at least till I'm done school... then we can go travelling the world." Marlys said mostly to himself, but the cat did meow in agreement, or so he thought.
When he got back to his clan, everyone was already asleep and tucked away. Frowning, he made his way to his den space and settled down for the night with his new best friend he made in the forest. It wasn't long till he eventually was in a peaceful sleep with his new cat companion.

Even though his family was only him and a cat so far, he wouldn't trade it for the world, even if it gave him parents. The next day was still a weekend, so he woke up late for he had slept in and did his required homework assignments, and once he was done, he decided to help around his clan, along with his cat.
"Oh thank you Marlys! How did you know that I needed some poppy seed?" A den mother asked. "Oh well, I kinda figured, because on the weekends you are always out for a long time and you return with a full basket." He explains to her.
"You are always a watchful eye, aren't you, Marlys?" She said, before bringing him into a hug. "Oh Marlys! You're wings! What happened to them?" She asked in astonishment.
"What do you mean? My wings are fine⸺" Marlys said before he expanded one side to reveal an accented pattern that was definitely not there yesterday. Marlys could only describe what he saw as a piece of art that ended up etched onto his wings. The shadow flight symbol was high in the sky, acting as the moon, with a little glow to give off the fact it was the moon, with some clouds with stars.
"Woah..." He said in astonishment. "That was definitely not there yesterday..."
The den mother smiled. "Well, maybe you are destined for something greater than you think Marlys. Because not everyone gets an etching like that in their wings." She said, before walking back inside of her den.
Marlys frowned at her words while he walked back to his own den. It was quite late, as the sun was setting, making the sky look like that it was on fire with its mash up colours of red, pink, and orange.
"I'm not destined for anything other than living a bad life it looks like..." He said while he watched the sun set. For he was born from an egg, and he was without a parental figure or a family for his whole life. And ended up getting bullied for being without having parents for his entire school career so far, but maybe…just maybe… in his last year of schooling, something will turn for the better. At least Marlys hoped that would happen.

"MEOW!" His cat companion yelled. Marlys chuckled, before he gave the black cat a few pets on the head. "Well... I guess now that you are here, I'm not as alone as I thought." He replied with a smile. The black cat in question just purred in response to the male dragons petting.
“Alrighty, let’s get back home. Unfortunately tomorrow I do have school..” Marlys sighed in disappointment as he picked up the black cat that was between his legs. Grabbing the cat gently, he placed the feline on his head, between the ridges on the top of his head as he travelled back to his den.

The next day was a drag compared to the day where he had found the place he had stumbled upon that had changed the inner membrane of his wings to a dark cloudy night with the shadow flight’s symbol as the moon. Though he tried to hide this new decal that got added to his body from that lake, it was of no use for every dragon that had passed him had done a double take, as the Ridgeback had a black blue wing membrane the day before. Time seemed to slow down to the Ridgeback, but he knew that time was a constant and never changed. It was then that Marlys had stumbled into the bad part of Sornieth.
For the first time in his life, he was afraid of what was going to happen. He was glad that he had his cat companion, but it seemed that his companion shared his terror.
“Mrrowww…” The cat said, fur bristled and on edge, tail standing on edge, eyes narrowed. Marlys knew that cats and other animals have senses that were much higher than his own. So he would trust his cat's judgement over his own.
“It’s okay⸺“ He said but paused as he just realized he never gave the black cat a name.
Marlys cleared his throat as he thought of a name as he ducked into a shadowed alleyway.
“I never did give you a name.” He said with an embarrassing tone. The cat just looked up at him with a questionable look, but was still on edge. “How does the name Shadow sound?” He asked, with a mrrow of disappointment. “Uh…. midnight?” He asked, to receive the same result. “Okay⸺how about Sushi?” He asked. Marlys didn’t receive any meows of disapproval.
“Sushi it is then.” He said, giving the cat a few pets, before ducking out of the alleyway, and trying to manoeuvre his way back home. But night had fallen, and the city looked completely different at night than how it does at day. The Ridgeback was on edge as he manoeuvred his way through the city. He felt like he was being watched, but he kept trying to shake the unnerving feeling off, but it was of no use, for it remained. The male reached the edge of the city and was thankful for the feeling of being gone.
“Let’s… not stay out past sunset…” he said, with a meow in response from Sushi.
With a quick flap of his wings, he zoomed back to his den at his home, quickly did his homework as he procrastinated till the last minute, and then went to bed, for the next day was a school day. Oh, joy.

How was he going to explain what happened to his wings? He could say that he got a tattoo... but would the teachers believe him? Those thoughts followed Marlys as he slept the night away with Sushi. The morning sunrise came rather quickly to the Ridgeback as he was off to his school as he was already getting some weird looks from his fellow classmates.

“Oh look at his wings!”
“Wait, isn’t Marlys a lightning flight dragon? Why does he have that tattoo of shadow flight?”
“Aren’t tattoos against the dress code?”
And the whispering continued throughout the school day, but at least Sushi was still with him, just hidden within his leathery black wings. She provided some comfort amongst the constant whispering that spread like wildfire. Marlys was practising some basic karate moves when his name was called by his teacher.
"Marlys? Come here kid." His teacher called out to him.
"I'm not a kid but whatever." He responded.
His teacher gave Marlys a blank faced stare. "All of you are hatchlings to me until you graduate from here. Anyways, the principal was asking for you to come to their office."
Marlys was dreading this moment, it was probably about what was on his wings. "Okay teach, I'll go down. Lemme grab my stuff." He responded and off he went down to the principal's office.
"Ah! Marlys! Welcome, please sit down," They responded. "Now, I'm sure you know why you were called down here right?"
"Yeah, it's about my wings right?" He responded while stretching his wings out.
"Yes, about that. Can you explain that to me my dear?"
"After school last week I had taken a different route back to my clan. I must've taken a wrong turn and I ended up deep within the Tangled Woods," Marlys had taken a moment to take a breath before he continued. "I had stumbled across a strange looking glade that had held a small pool. While I was there, I felt like I was disturbing a greater entity. It could've been the Shadowbinder herself, but I highly doubt it." Marlys responded.
"I had spent the night in that small glade, and when I woke up that small pool that was in the center of it had disappeared over the night I spent. I had returned to my clan after that strange encounter and then a den-mother had pointed out that my wings had changed. I promise that I didn't get a tattoo." He said.
"Well, Marlys I know you are a good kid and I know you wouldn't lie. But you can't go without a consequence." They reasoned to the young dragon.
"Figured as much..." Marlys whispered to himself.
"Now Marlys, I know you are one of our best students that is in the karate class right? Well, we have a tourney coming up and I know that you'd like to participate. But you have to help set up the tourney after school. If you get it set up, maybe there will be time to sign up." They added with a smile.
"Okay, I'll get it done," He responded while leaving. He wasn't happy, but the fact that he could potentially participate in a karate tournament made him deal with it. A gentle meow surprised him out of his thoughts.
"Shhh Sushi, I don't want you to get caught." But the meows continued. And soon turned into a low hiss for the resident bullies of the school came into his path.
"Ah Marlys, there you are. You ready for your daily beating?" A snooty guardian said with malicious intent. "Listen, I don't want to deal with you right now⸺" Marlys said, trying to walk past him.
"Listen here Marlys, you leave when I say you leave." The guardian Zwei had said. Zwei had noticed the difference on his wings and smirked.
"New tattoo? Or are you just switching allegiances? You know that tattoos are against the dress code. And, you also know that shadow is a bunch of backstabbers, liars, and thieves right?" Zwei said.
"Zwei just leave, I already talked to the principal about it, you wouldn't understand the situation,"
"Oh? I think I do! You are just a lonely little hatchling looking for a home to call yours. After all you don't have any parents." Zwei said with a hardy laugh while walking away. Marlys wanted to just pounce right onto the snooty guardian for mentioning his lack of parents.
"Oh, and Marlys? Don't even bother entering the tourney. You won't ever beat me."
"Tell me, Zwei, what will happen if I do enter? And what will happen if I beat you?" Marlys asked with a boost of confidence.
Zwei turned around and gave a laugh. A mocking laugh. "You really think you can beat me? I'd like to see you try. You are on. You better not stand me up on the day of the tourney. Or you will end up living hell." Zwei said before finally walking away.
Marlys let out a breath he didn't know he was holding. "That was… refreshing to say the least. Standing up to him..." He said to himself. "But, even though he seems scary and intimidating… regardless, I will stand up to him on the day of the tourney."

As per requested by the principal, he stayed after school to help set up the stuff for the tourney that will be starting on the weekend. Surprisingly there wasn't much to set up for the tourney. Setting up the decorations was the most difficult as he had to decorate the entrance to the school, the gym, and the assembly room. The sun had set but by the time he left the school, and other dragons were leaving as well he noticed. Most likely practising for the tourney he thought to himself.
He wasn't afraid of the dark, but he didn't want to experience what had happened to him when he had ended up in the city at night. Marlys shuttered with a chill going down his body. Instead of walking, he used his powerful wings to take flight, making sure that Sushi was safe before taking flight into the sky.
When he had arrived at his den he immediately went to sleep with Sushi by his side, purring as she slept.

The next days were just a blur to Marlys, as he mostly spent his days training for the tourney, even going so far to surpass his teacher in what he had learned for students. Though he spent most of the week training, he also was reading up on pretty advanced moves and he performed the moves perfectly on the first try.

Marlys was called a prodigy from the start of his training regime for the tourney. Another thing to note was that Zwei was not seen since the challenge for who would win the tourney. Marlys often wondered where he had disappeared, but he couldn't dwell on it for long for the day of the tourney had arrived.
To say that he was nervous was an understatement, but he was prepared. He was filled with determination, and he had his cat companion with him.
"Okay Sushi, you aren't going to be able to stay with me during this okay? Try and be in a safe spot away from prying eyes so they don't take you away." He said, giving her a gentle pat on the head before she bounced away, but she remained close by to watch.

A simple tourney with simple rules: if you lose your match you are eliminated from your bracket. Though Marlys wiped his bracket with ease, they had no chance, for they had terrible form compared to his extensive training. His final opponent was none other than Zwei.
"Of course you didn't get eliminated, parentless." Zwei sneered. "Enjoy the attention while it lasts, but when you lose no one will remember you." He taunted.
Marlys wasn't fazed, "That may be true, but after tonight when I win, no one will remember you." He retorted.
The fight between the guardian and Ridgeback was extensive, with neither dragon faltering in their strides, though Marlys held the upper hand, for he had trained extensively for this moment. Marlys with newfound strength had kicked Zwei out of the ring with a powerful kick to the side.
"AND WITH A POWERFUL KICK MARLYS IS THE CHAMPION OF THE KARATE TOURNEY!" An announcer exclaimed.
Sushi had immediately returned to Marlys' side, with her standing atop his head as he smiled while holding the trophy he won.
"We did it, Sushi! We really did it!"
