So what if I’m crazy? The best people are.
What a waste of a day.
Li had been patrolling all day to find this spot, starting out jittery and irritable to begin with, from memories she couldn't, or wouldn't name. There was no difference after all.
The afternoon had long worn on now, and she had finally attained her goal to find a pretty nice place, possibly full of secrets, ruins, any kind of small distraction or entertainment far off the paths dragons would tread. Not a great place, such things probably didn't exist. But a good enough one, with just that certain something, and most importantly no dragons.
Or, at least she'd thought she finally located one. Until just now.
There was another dragon here. Not just any dragon, but a Wildclaw too.
That was it, that was all it took. The day could possibly be salvaged ever so slightly, but it would be marred now regardless.
She slunk behind one of the many large arrays of shrubs, that could have hid anything interesting, but now had become a place to hide herself.
Not for long, anyway. Soon she'd give up in disgust and leave, running off the complicated feelings until her body was too tired for a while to even acknowledge them.
Soon. First though, she obeyed an embittered curiosity to see just what sort of dragon had ruined the whole day's event by showing up in this wild place.
The intruder was black and black, maybe dark blue or something. The colors were similar to her, and it didn't really matter. At least the coloration was alright, she acknowledged begrudgingly. It didn't remind her of anything bad, anyway.
The Wildclaw under scrutiny seemed to be shuddering. She couldn't tell much more about it from this distance, save that it seemed to be hesitating, looking intently down a small slope of the land, past some more bushes and enormous raw crystals.
What on Sorneith was so interesting anyway, that it had to come all the way out here to see or do it? There shouldn't be any reason for others to go out of their way to do something like this. No one else actually liked anything much, they were all so shallow and full of false emotions. The depth of any dragon's character, she had long ago decided, was how good they were at pretending they had deep emotions and passions for anything.
This would have been such a good spot, too. Her legs ached in slight throbs from the previously relentless jogging to get here. It wasn't distracting yet and certainly would never debilitate her, but it did factor a little into her decision to change the plan. Whatever this Wildclaw was looking at, it obviously thought it really wanted, and that was as good a reason as any to see if she could go about getting to it first.
Anyway, whatever was down there would be a surprise technically, so maybe showing up this dragon would salvage something fun from the wreckage of the day.
It took her very little time to decide this, reasoning through it quickly, almost instinctually. She was running forward again into view soon after she'd initially stopped. The intruder Wildclaw noticed her immediately, and whipped his head around, but quickly turned to a back and forth nervous glances between her and that stupid bush.
Maybe he was guilty of something. He might have looked kind of desperate.
She didn't really spare any thought to this beyond acknowledging it as a sort of side note, in case it was important after the mystery of what the bush had was solved.
Just as she drew level with him, she could finally see what the whole thing was about, and paused in surprise.
This wasn't an item after all. This was a Carmine Serthis. An entire Serthis!
What was this guy playing at? The serpent's tail was caught in a wicked looking metal trap, fashioned into the shape of some kind of jaws and connected directly to the ground. Chaotic patterns had been whipped into the dust from her previous struggles, though she was laying prone and exhausted now.
Li was pleased to see anyway, that the fire in her eyes hadn't died out.
She seemed so offended to have been caught in any kind of trap at all. The thing was biting fiercely into her skin and had cut deeply by now, but not anywhere near all the way through. What kind of a trap was this, anyway? What was it even originally for? Maybe it was for them. Though, these things all had arms and fingers, why couldn't she have just got out by now?
A tense moment passed in stillness from all.
Maybe she just didn't have the strength to get it off of her. That was pretty ironic. Looking totally able to just get out of a trap, but not being capable of it. Sort of familiar.
"Who are you? This creature is dangerous, I don't know what to do. Are you going to do something?"
Li started, she had been so focused on the Serthis, however briefly, that she'd forgotten the intruder was still there. She rounded on him irritably.
"Did you do this? Whatever, it doesn't matter." She was admittedly curious, but rescinded her question quickly upon realizing that asking it would mean a conversation, and that would lead to more, and that would lead to no chance of the entire week being salvaged.
A little angry at herself for losing track like that, she huffed quietly and jumped down beside the trapped serpent. That was all the acknowledgment that guy was going to get from her.
The girl hadn't been taken by surprise very long. She flattened herself and coiled as best she could under the circumstances.
Li could only surmise she was about to be bitten. That would just be inconvenient, and how ungrateful.
"Stop that. I'm trying to get you out of there."
Well, that was a declaration of intention anyway, and now it was up to the girl if she was going to continue to be a nuisance or not.
For her own part, Li didn't like to go back on her word, and set about trying to break that trap up nicely. Maybe it wouldn't work again. That would be something.
She tried a few scrabbling grips, but it was awkward to get a hold on properly in order to pull. She hadn't been bitten yet. That was pretty unexpected.
In what was very little time at all, but seemed entirely too long for Li's satisfaction, she'd hit upon the trick of it. A back claw to hold one half down, and the other for leverage. With a satisfying creak, the thing came undone and snapped to a fully open position.
Like Lightning, the Serthis drew herself entirely out of it. Li's attention was still momentarily on the strange thing. What a weird device. It was supposed to catch something, and then what? Then the victim just got to sit around, trapped in pain until they wasted away? This was getting a little too.. something.
She wouldn't acknowledge specific words, and so wouldn't allow herself to think this way of looking at it had become a little personal, but that had never stopped the thoughts that led up to the words which were locked away. The entire thought was brushed away with long held practice, leaving behind the barest twinges of self-deprecation, but now there was something to divert attention.
Frustrated, Li kicked the thing, noting with satisfaction that whatever had connected it firmly into the rock broke with a panging sound, and the trap itself clanged and bounced a few times before stopping with a snap shut. Now it wouldn't be of any use to any dragon, and the destruction along with an idea of the vexation the one who set it would have, was rather soothing. Ahh..
A small motion caught her eye.
The snake was still there. She couldn't even fathom why.
"Get out of here. Nothing's stopping you now."
Still, the girl gazed fixedly at her, as if committing her to memory.
It was unnerving, but surprisingly not irritating. Something about her alien qualities and behavior didn't quite bring up any preemptive defensiveness.
The Serthis girl slithered forward just a little, and seemed almost about to say something, when a gentle rustling from the bushes snapped her attention and gaze fearfully away. She paused no longer, and fled hastily without a backwards glance.
Oh? What was she afraid of, some bird or something?
Li scoffed slightly, a little amused with this imagery despite herself.
Quite swiftly however, she found it was definitely no bird.
A group of four new Serthis had emerged from the obscuring landscape, in full attack mode. They all looked to be relatively young, like the trapped girl. None of them were wielding any weaponry.
Faced with this onslaught, Li's first reaction was to simply stand there, mildly interested. Their hissing was almost in tandem, and certainly no bluffs. It seemed almost hypnotic, and they could be considered pretty, really.
She had known what they were, and what the other one was, but never really encountered any face to face before today. Still, she wasn't afraid, but a kind of calm, intrigued curiosity had began to overtake her. It was a pleasant sort of feeling, rather unusual. These creatures were interesting.
What could have been a standoff for a little longer was interrupted by that stupid Wildclaw behind her. Again, she'd been so caught up in something interesting that she forgot he was there. He'd been so quiet before now and unobtrusive, but now he started to yell something, and her mind was snapped back to distrust.
She was barely holding on to an urge to lash out until he jumped toward her, still yelling.
"Watch out! They're all really venomous, they're going to kill you, they're vicious especially in a tribe like that and-"
"Shut up! Shut up and get back out of the way!"
"But-"
"Get. Out. Of the way!"
She was so, so angry now. Angry, embarrassed and overwhelmed.
The line of serpents broke formation and came at her in a unit, though disorganized and independent.
Fine. Good, actually. That was good! Maybe beating these up would stop some of this from happening, all of these stupid feelings and stupid Wildclaws being here and stupid time and place and stupid idea to even come here in the first place..
This thought raged into the conclusion and then faded away, replaced by the instinct for battle and the rushing of blood in her veins.
She veered off and snapped at a snake that came too close, missing him by mere inches. The chaotic mass of slithering creatures were moving in ceaseless patterns, either trying to put her off her stance or get in a good striking position.
Ha! The joke was on them, she had no stance. This wasn't combat of Wildclaws, or dragons, or any art at all. This was just a wild, anarchic mess in response to their own tumultuous activities.
How exhilarating to be a creature of instinct, unfettered by and never conceiving of any reason for hiding the way one felt. There were no masks of politeness in a fight, and certainly no social politics.
She was just getting used to this, and reveling in the instantaneous snapping of activity without forethought, fangs bared, claws at the ready for a jump, wings vibrating in excitement, when the circle reformed around her in the center.
At first the bite wasn't even of any note. It was only a slight pricking that she registered on a delay. The attack had come from behind, and she completely ignored it, in favor of pursuing a leap on the possible leader in front.
Two more successive bites however, and the searing pain from the first had now started at the injection site. What was this, even? Why did it burn so badly?
Surely just a bite from those fangs wouldn't be this painful or cause this. Their fangs were sharp, but they were tiny, after all. This didn't make any sense, and it had all been going so well, and now look what happened.
Thrown off at the agony of the bites all combining into a feeling that seemed to be making her blood turn into lava, she turned impulsively to check her sides for any actual burns. There were none, at least not yet- but that was all the opportunity the leader had needed.
Li had barely turned her head again when the largest of the group, the Opheodrys, lunged directly at the opening of a fully exposed neck. As it was, she jerked out of the way just in time to avoid a facial bite, but left her shoulder completely vulnerable.
This last sinking bite wasn't swift and gone in the execution.
This one clung, and clenched, ground pressure and ragged cuts into her skin, held deep.
With an enraged guttural cry of frustration and helplessness, Li convulsed backwards and fell, scrambling to reach her feet again.
Her own body wouldn't obey her however. Muscles tightened and refused to move, pulsing agony and stiff as iron bars.
At last even her head and neck were forced into a paralyzed position on the ground, and it was all she could do to continue to breathe steadily.
How completely unbelievable. She could have won this! If they hadn't cheated, she could have won...
Manifesting thoughts became too hard to bear in this state, and her mind finally lapsed into a quiet, weary patience for the moment.
She was only barely aware of more, new noises behind her, some scuffling and shrieks, a great many hissing and slithering sounds, that seemed to last far too long. In reality, this new fight had only been brief.
Already having used their last current vestiges of extra potent toxin, the Serthis were enraged by the first opponent forcing them into that maneuver at all, and quickly retreated entirely.
Blessed calm had resurfaced. Mind too weary and body too unable to do anything at all, Li accepted her fate with calm, almost gratifying, serenity.
Everything was entirely out of her control, and it was almost pleasant. Maybe she would lay here for hours, maybe she would just die, but she couldn't find it in herself to be concerned at all. This felt right. There was no terror, and there were no other feelings, nothing intrusive at all. Her senses tuned into a slight breeze, and she felt herself anticipating with some fondness the idea of just lapsing into unconsciousness for a while...
"Are you okay? No, you're not okay, I'm so sorry! I should have done something earlier but I didn't know what to do and I've never fought any Serthis before and I didn't know what you were doing and how I should help you or if you'd fought tons of them before and had it all handled but it's okay now they've all left I think they're young and inexperienced they used up all their bottles they brought with them maybe and it's so lucky they didn't bring more or they might have killed you but maybe they already did oh I'm so sorry...!"
Li's eyes refocused, and she emitted a small groan. Oh, right. Him.
Yet again, he'd spoiled the mood. He must have been determined to do it just one more time. Maybe if she played dead.. No, he'd probably start to cry over her and that would be even more intolerable.
She experimentally tried to move her jaws, and found with some practice, though stiff, they were still in enough working order to hopefully get rid of him.
"Gow'y.."
"What?"
She hissed, a halfhearted, ragged gesture in her current state of rapidly encroaching sweet unconsciousness.
"Go. Away."
"But you're injured, I have to take you back to your clan! They must be really worried about you and it's all my fault, I can't stand leaving you here alone there could be even more of them coming who knows how many there are out here! Thank you so much for trying to help you did help you helped the one and you defended me and I never expected that and just thank you!"
Again, his speech grew more hurried and fearful as it went on, and again she tried to elucidate her intentions. He wasn't getting this at all, and his misunderstanding was horrifying.
"No. Go away. I'm fine. I'll be fine. Whatever. I didn't help you. I didn't do it to help you. I wasn't even thinking about you, I don't know you and I don't care about you. Go away!"
"Even if that's true, you still did so thank you-"
"I never did!" If she hadn't been struck incapable, she would have writhed and shrieked at this exclamation.
"Forget about it! Don't you dare remember it! Go away or as soon as I get up I'll attack you next!"
Still he seemed to hesitate, but she could sense she now had the advantage, and maybe just one more push would do it.
Summoning up her last reserves of strength, combating the enveloping tiredness one more time, she drew a ragged breath and loosed the most guttural, sibilant of curses at him in the oldest common language she knew.
That seemed to do it. There was one last, thankfully brief, moment of hesitation, before he took to the sky, and she could no longer see him as he was now gliding a distance before running off, presumably far out of sight.
Flooded with relief, she finally succumbed to the patient and all enveloping veil of sleep, right in the open where she lay.
What a waste of a day...
The sailors quiver, for the stars have run red. Who will I raise these swords against, when all my enemies lay at my back? I have traveled down the shadowed gorge, I have slept beside the crimson river, I have waded through the fields teaming with black-tipped sparrows. What land-locked ship could carry me hither? Whose hands will clasp tight against my eyes? When the dawn bleeds again for me, what foreboding will set my wings to fire?
