Vortex was a blind wanderer taken in by Clematis while she was on a stroll through the tundra. When the spiral returned with a blind coatl, Coalasko and Freezerius weren’t too thrilled- at least not until Vortex proved her magical prowess and calming demeanor. Vortex was welcomed in afterwards, where she began teaching the dragonets and keeping the library tidy. She is also in charge of keeping guard of the resident scroll stealer, to prevent it from robbing the entire school of its scrolls. Her efforts have made the library of the Serpent’s Children rather impressive, and the young dragons and their beastclan friends always want to hear another story.
With the help of one of her daughters, Whirlpool, Vortex has managed to craft books with both printed text and raised bumps of braille. The paper is strengthened so it retains the shape, allowing for Vortex to read the books for herself or to the dragonets. Every single book in the SC’s collection has been translated this way, and occasionally the two print extra copies to sell to other clans.
Unlike the other representatives, she does not travel and attempt to add dragons to Clematis’ cause. In fact, she rarely leaves the caves, finding comfort in her occupation with the dragonets. Vortex and Whirlpool dump any extra books they’ve made on the others, who carry it off to markets for them.
Despite lacking eyes, Vortex’s mastery of magic allows her to further her navigational prowess gifted by heightened senses. Through training, she can essentially echolocate- interestingly, this makes her better at sensing spies than most sighted dragons, as she can sense their silhouettes, and hear movements the average dragon cannot. She often knows someone is approaching her before they even open their mouth to speak. This ability means she is ‘respected’ by the children of the clan, knowing she can tell if any book is out of place, or hasn’t been returned!

Vortex was offered ‘freedom’ by Omen soon after she ran off with Harbinger, but Vortex denied. She’s been wary of any dragons she feels nearby ever since.
