Biography
Hermes remembered the aimless breeze. He remembered many things, of course, but the breeze—that was special. To him, it had always felt like a song, a hum, a murmur. Welcoming. That’s why he remembered it. He would be hard-pressed to remember anything else about his previous clan, the place where he was hatched and loved until it was time for him to see the world. But the breeze was unforgettable. He could always remember the breeze. He would describe it as a lullaby. He supposed it was as close to the truth as he could come to articulating. It was familiar, ubiquitous, something that he didn’t remember learning and loving, but that he did all the same. A summer wind or winter gale, how they felt against the leather of his wings, how he stretched without thinking whenever one brushed his long body. He would feel the push and pull of the wind, and he would stretch his long neck and look at the horizon in any direction and think he was being called. Where to, he never knew. Another thing Hermes remembered was his parents. Or at least he remembered loving them. He took after his father. This, he remembered better than other facts. Hermes resembled him in looks, yes, but also in some more personal details. Wind-aligned, in love with the open skies, unafraid to compass the globe with nothing except their wings. Spirals were made to traverse the heavens, after all. Funny, to think he loved flying before he got any sort of practical application out of it. Productivity. Usefulness. He was never one to think simple pleasures needed to have a profitable purpose, and yet it happened naturally for him. He enjoyed flying, loved fleeting from one corner of Sornieth to another, adored seeing the landscape change under his wings. So why not do something with that? Aimless wandering was never appealing to Hermes. Travellers and adventurers might find it irresistible, but he needed a purpose. He needed, in a way, to derive further joy from it. He needed to feel as though was he was doing mattered not only to him but to others as well. But how? One day, the answer came to him. Hermes had been twisting himself into literal knots, driving his fellow clansmates to vexation, until one had asked him to deliver the mail if he had so much free time. Hermes did so, swirling in and out of dens as he gave every dragon the parcels and parchments they had been expecting. And then he thought—what if he did this again? What if he delivered parcels and parchments even further away? What if he soared across the world bringing news to all corners, keeping dragons in touch, helping forge alliances and sustain friendships? What if he flew and had a destination? Hermes remembered the aimless breeze. Remembered how it pushed and pulled. He remembered feeling aimless along with it, stretched thin as he tried to encompass rather than compass the globe. He thought about having a purpose, a goal, a map with overlapping but clear lines. And after that, he thought no more. Instead, he bought a satchel and went to work—as his clan’s new courier. |
