Biography

TALIA - Memory Keeper

Sepia Lace Waist Frill Highreach Bonepicker Sepia Lace Headpiece

She cannot forget the days gone by. They haunt her, hidden behind a soft brown veil, grainy but whole, relentless forever. The memories demand to be kept, hidden away and preserved for the future, when they can dog someone else to the ends of the earth in their quest to never be forgotten. They cling bitterly to empty pages where they can, and hurtle through idle minds if given the chance.

Talia has hated every moment of it.

She wishes she could forget. It would be a different world entirely if she did not have such a duty thrust upon her shoulders. But everywhere she goes, whatever she touches, she finds new memories begging for immortality, and she cannot refuse them. She does not have the heart to allow them to be forgotten, and though the memories are not hers, she lets them in, holds them close until she can find the page or the canvas or the song that will lead them on to new lives.

It has left her little time to be her own person, what with the memories of others' triumphs and tragedies ricocheting through her heart. Sometimes, she cannot be sure what is her own mind and what once belonged to someone else. The lines blur as more memories make themselves at home, and her magic can only rehome so many memories at once.

Still, she dreams. She dreams of forgetting, and of letting the memories die, just for once. If she had to forget everything but a single thought, the wish to forget would be the only thing worth keeping.

Then again, there are some things she could not bear to forget, some things that are completely her own. She remembers the warmth in her parents' eyes when she was young, and the joy in her sisters' laughs when they played together, before the memories were too many, too strong.

But most of all, she would be unable to lose Haetara.

She fell slowly, and then all at once. It scared her even though she had legions of loving memories from other dragons telling her exactly what it was like. It was supposed to feel like she couldn't breathe, couldn't sleep without her beloved, like the universe was exploding every time they were near and Haetara was the only thing that mattered in the whole world. But the reality was that Talia didn't fall in love that way with the tarotist trader. It so much softer, sweeter, that she didn't notice until she tumbled headlong over the edge.

At first, Haetara was just a welcome remedy to the memories roaring through her head. She provided Talia will all manner of concoctions to help her sleep, or just to clear her mind for a while, packaging them with tender care that Talia didn't recognize as flirting at the time. She was Talia's savior, the only dragon who had ever been able to supply her with peace from the past, and she was so grateful.

But every visit tugged on her heartstrings, tying them to Haetara's without her even noticing. She spent longer and longer in Haetara's cart, asked more questions, got more personal. She tried to learn a little of tarot, though it gave her a headache for days when she tried. The symbolism in the cards reacted badly with the memories swirling through her head, so badly that Haetara stayed after the rest of the caravan left just to be sure Talia would recover from the ordeal.

It was when Haetara did that, when she let her caravan family go on without her, that Talia knew the tarotist loved her. And then it was like plunging headfirst into ice water in the heat of summer. Everything became clear, and for a startling second, the memories had no power over Talia. All she sensed was Haetara's affection, bright as the sun, and it blocked out everything but Talia's own memories, the ones she clung to fiercely.

Since then, they have been nearly inseparable. Talia wishes Haetara would stay longer, or even forever, but she also knows her beloved's heart yearns for travel and the company of her caravan, and she cannot deny her that. Still, she looks forward to the day they can be together at last, and she hopes by then that she will be rid of her extra memories. Until then, while Haetara is away, she plants herbs outside their shared den, awaiting her return.
