History
Crag wasn't always the big, fierce Snapper that now stands at one of the top positions of the clan's heirarchy. He was born from two Guardian parents and had a brother and sister. Crag's family was somewhat of a disaster, as the hatchlings were neglected and his parents rarely present. He ended up taking care of his runt sister while his older brother left as soon as he was able. Eventually, Crag's sister passed, so Crag left the clan his parents were in and wandered for a long time. As a young adult, he found a small, rather mixed clan of dragons ran by a self-proclaimed king and queen. The queen was favorable to him and he spent a lot of time as an advisor of sorts for them. It was hard for Crag since he had no experience with royalty or how clan mechanics actually worked, but it seemed that this clan had no idea either, so the rules shaped as the clan grew. Crag made the dark decision to change his life entirely the day that his queen, Mara, decided to make the journey to Dragonhome and become a Snapper...

"This is not our home. The Pillar of the World calls to me, so it calls to all of us." Mara told Crag and Strife, her friend and husband respectively, while she had them gathered in her personal quarters. "Snappers belong in Dragonhome, therefore I should become a Snapper."

"I will too." Crag said a little too quickly, causing Strife to give him a sideways glance. "It's only right," he then added, "I mean, it would make living there easier for us..."

Mara gave him a slow, thoughtful nod, and then turned to look at her two newborn daughters that slept in the nest near her. "I should have done this before they were born," she muttered to herself, but still loud enough for Crag and Strife to hear her. Mara was going to speak again but Strife scoffed loudly and angrily, and growled at the two Guardians, "Become a Snapper just to go to Dragonhome? The Earthshaker himself would say that's a stupid idea." Crag gave Strife a look of surprise, but when he looked over at Mara, her expression was untelling. Strife continued, "Where would we even get the treasure for the scrolls anyway? And you do realize that we'd need fifteen of them then, right? Or did you not care about the rest of the clan?"

"It can be done." Crag said confidently, feeling he was backing up Mara's plan.

"You don't even know. So shut. Up." Strife stepped close to Crag, threateningly, and the two faced off. Mara was so deep in thought she didn't care what they were doing. Crag let out a deep, guttural growl that awoke the hatchlings and caused them to whimper.

"It will be done." Mara said as she moved to the hatchlings attention. "Strife, come comfort your daughter." Strife glared at Crag for a moment before doing as Mara said and walked over to the nest. The meeting was over then, and Crag left, burning holes into the back of Strife's head as he went with a glare of hate.

~*~~*~~*~~*~~*~~*~

It was years later before Mara actually announced her plans of taking the long journey to Dragonhome to the entire clan. At that time, there were many dragons of all species, including Mirrors like Strife, Wildclaws, Guardians and even the then rare Imperial. Not a lot of them took the news well that they should "probably" become Snappers, as Mara carefully worded it, but Crag managed to convince a lot of them that it was the right thing to do. The clan had a lot of respect for Crag so they all tried to find safety in the decision that he was so confidently backing. The following weeks, however, ended up seriously dividing the clan, mostly thanks to Strife's unwillingness to become a Snapper. Crag despised that Strife kept reinforcing the doubts of the clan, so he spent a lot of time trying to reassure them and undo the chaos Strife was causing. It didn't really work as eventually, before the big journey took place, some of the dragons still left the clan.

One night, Mara invited Crag into her quarters to talk. She looked stressed, not something Crag saw in her often. "Do you see what Strife is doing?" She questioned Crag, who remained quiet. "I can't imagine why he's doing this. What I need is for someone to actually take this seriously." Mara moved closer to Crag, who became very nervous being so close to her. "Crag," Mara said in a soft voice, "Those dragons out there, they won't listen to me because they don't feel that they should. I need someone who can make them feel that way." She reached over Crag and grabbed a box, then sat very close to him and opened it. Inside, there were two Snapper scrolls. Crag's mouth dropped slightly, but she shushed him and continued, "I had these for Strife and I, but it has become clear to me that he'll never do what I need him to..." She removed one scroll and held it out to Crag. "...Will you?"

That night, Crag and Mara stayed together in her den, and in the morning, everything changed, especially Crag.

~*~~*~~*~~*~~*~~*~

The clan gathered outside of Mara's den, having been called there for a meeting. There were hushed whispers about what could be going on now, but everyone turned silent when a massive Snapper stepped out of her den. It was Crag, in his newly changed Snapper form. "I called you all here," he said, a tone in his voice that no one had ever heard before, but it scared them. "This is the way things are going to be: we're leaving to Dragonhome soon. This means you have a few days to get your things together. You unfortunate few who aren't Snappers by now will become them before we leave, or else there will be consequences to be had."

Dragons in the crowd began to murmur. Was this really how Crag was going to approach them? Most of them couldn't believe it, this wasn't the Crag they knew, who was usually bossy but never threatening. "Crag..." one of the dragons, a Ridgeback, said hesitantly, "I like being a Ridgeback. I would like to stay this way, and my home is with you all. I won't become a Snapper, but I would like to stay." He gave a weary smile, and some other dragons nodded and muttered in agreement.

Crag looked back at the den and met Mara's eyes, who stared back at Crag, displeased. Crag lips curled in frustration as he faced the Ridgeback once more, "You just don't get it," he growled.

But the Ridgeback stepped closer to Crag, a hint of fear but also defiance showing on his face, "But I do Crag. This is an unfair reque--" he was cut off suddenly when Crag grabbed him by the throat. The clan collectively gasped, but no one moved to interfere. Mara watched Crag from the shadows of her den, her previous look of displeasure turning to the slightest smile.

"You don't," Crag snarled, "But I'll help you get it." Not a second after he spoke and Crag slammed the Ridgeback to the ground, stepping on the Ridgeback's wings to pin him down, and then he just laid into him. It was one hard punch after another and the Ridgeback never even had a chance; the dragon had been pummeled to death by Crag.

When he was through, he stood over the body, huffing, and stared over at Mara. She had a glimmer in her eye when she returned his stare, then she turned away and disappeared into the den. Crag looked back to the clan. "Now do you all get it? This is the way things are now. Follow in line, or don't. But now you all see what will happen if you don't."

That very day, Mara decided after the fiasco that it was the right time to begin the journey. To calm the clan, she promised them that they didn't have to become Snappers until they actually made it to the Earth territory, and even promised that if they didn't like it there, they could leave the clan without consequence. But along the way, Strife caused a lot of trouble. Crag couldn't touch Strife, he was Mara's husband regardless, and therefore Strife was his leader too. But every time Strife was around, the non-Snappers in the clan got rowdy and rebellious. They did at least feed Crag power every time he stepped in to put them back in their place, but with Strife around, Crag couldn't shut them down the way he wanted to.

On one of the nights during the journey, Crag approached Mara in her makeshift den, a place Strife had long stopped going to. "Mara, we need to talk." She halfheartedly nodded to him and he moved over to her. "Strife is in our way. Let me remove him from us."

Mara paused what she was doing and replied in an all too-calm voice, "That's very bold of you, Crag."

"I would do anything for you. I just need--"

"You need to focus on the clan. You're the law and order for them. That's all." She faced Crag, a cold look in her eyes. "Strife is no concern to you. He's my husband and your king. Respect him as such or you can remove yourself instead."

"You're not serious, Mara? Strife is--"

"Do as you're told and get out." Mara turned her back on Crag and he was stunned. He had more to say but he knew speaking out at her would only anger her further. Or was she even angry? He honestly couldn't tell. He lowered his head in sadness and embarrassment and left her den. Many things ran through his head, but all of them pointed to him having done something wrong. Surely his queen, the matriarch Mara, would have never spoken to him in that way if he was in the right with her. He decided after that night to never speak of Strife again, and moreover, to keep his focus on overseeing the clan and enforcing all the things that would make Mara happy.

Present Day
The Ridgeback was the first dragon Crag had ever put down, but he certainly wasn't the last. After reaching a spot to settle down in Dragonhome, Crag earned the title of "Enforcer of Clan Mara," or among the Snappers, "The Barking Billy Goat" as a joke to his looks and the way he acts. Regardless of his looks and personality, he took a mate by the name of Tor who had traveled with them and been with the clan since the beginning. Mara told Crag specifically, "Get a mate already, Crag. She'll keep your mind straight and off of other things" And so he did exactly that, and was lucky that Tor even agreed.

To this day Crag is still a brutal Snapper, but in his older years, he's taken to be a bit more lenient. Granted, Mara has the clan almost exactly how she wants it, so Crag has less to actually enforce. Many times when he's needed, it is to deal with rowdy outsiders or newcomers, all who quickly learn to bow to Mara and cower to Crag. But he has a long list of blood on his claws and it probably won't stop.

All do as Crag says, all work for Crag, all belong to Crag. But all Crag wants...he will never get.
