Remmiv

Heat. That was the first sensation that the newly hatched mirror felt. It was the heat from the magma that flowed around him as if it were a stream of death, the heat from flames that towered above him as they stretched for the sky, the heat of other eggs around him that were in various states of hatching. It was the heat of belonging, of not being alone, of being a part of something. The clan that Remmiv was born into didn’t care about whose hatchling was whose, it didn’t matter because love wasn’t something they focused on. They lived like the flames around them did, bright and hot and fast and devouring everything in their path. Fire held no love for anything other than destruction and that’s what the clan was. A clan of destruction, fire, anger, rage, chaos. And the mirror reveled in it.

The clan followed the lava as it flowed throughout the land. When they came upon something that remained untouched by the scorching orange tongues they took it upon themselves to desecrate it. Other dragon clans they came across kept their children out of sight, fear and contempt in their eyes as they watched the small clan of mirrors prowl throughout the land. The only thing that kept them apart from the beastclans was the fact that they never fought against dragons and other clans. They didn’t even fight among themselves. They may have worshipped the flames but they knew that Flamecaller, even in her absence, protected those living in her land.

Among the other mirrors of the clan, Remmiv was handsome. Sometime in his youth he had been burned by flames and though it had been painful and the recovery had been slow, the clan saw it as a blessing from the flames themselves. His skin had scarred over now, leaving paler patches of flesh and scales across his body. Because of these scars and because of his clan’s way of living, he was a sought after mate. Females in the clan constantly vyed for his attention, trying to impress him with how close they would get to the flames but never willing to scar themselves the way he had. In a way it disgusted him that they wanted him but didn’t want to look like him.

It wasn’t until he was a fully grown adult that he realized how psychotic his clan really was. They had made camp near another camp because of the size of the lava lake near that location. The other clan was calm, peaceful, and lived beautifully. Remmiv’s clan lived like fires that couldn’t be controlled. They stalked where the pleased, did what they wanted, took orders from no one, and they couldn’t be stopped. This other clan though, was another type of fire that entranced the mirror. It was filled with all sorts of dragons from places all over Sornieth. This other clan lived like the warm glow of a fire, comforting and protective, promising safety in it’s light and warmth. It was new and drew him to their territory.

Somehow his birth clan found out. They were furious with him and saw it as a betrayal of their own way of life. The clan leader, called such due only to his sheer size and intensity, banished him from not only the clan but from the Ashfall Wastes. He commanded that the clan vow that if they ever saw him in these lands ago that they would treat him as fire would a log. They would tear him apart, without mercy and with a pleasure that should have sickened them. It sickened Remmiv and while he was burdened with sadness at having to leave his clan and home, he knew that staying now would serve him no good. There was nothing but chaos and destruction left there.

With heavy wings and a heavier heart, the scarred mirror took to the skies and flew northwards, not even knowing what he would find. He had never left the land of fire and smoke, had never known skies to be anything but gray and ash filled. So when his exhausted wings deposited him roughly in the Everbloom Gardens within the Viridian Labyrinth, his eyes were wide with shock and wonder. No greenery had existed in his birth home, or at least not for long, and seeing all of it now filled him with a peace he never knew had been missing. Remmiv had landed near a nature clan and they accepted him into their ranks without question. They gave his burns curious looks and he knew they were burning with questions but they were never spoken. In this new place, this living place, he felt he could leave behind everything that he had been born into.

That is, until he met Chaos. The guardian had been in the clan for years before the mirror had become part of it and the two of them were vastly different. Remmiv preferred to stay unnoticed, going about his day to day life in this peaceful land. Chaos manipulated people to get things that he wanted and loved the attention he often received. Whenever they were near each other, the two would clash. The arcane dragon was power hungry and the fire born dragon had seen what power did to dragons. Under the pretense of protecting his new clan, he vowed that he wouldn’t let this new enemy continue to control the clan. Because his frustration clouded his vision, Remmiv was blind to the fact that Chaos was not controlling the clan. Manipulating, yes, powerful, yes, but not controlling. He did things that were in the best interest of the clan. Some dragons feared the power he seemed to have but they knew he meant them no harm.

It took Remmiv far too long to realize that. He’d let anger control how he saw the guardian, seeing him in a red-tinted light, seeing him as the enemy. Though he eventually learned the dragon didn’t want to destroy the clan or control them, he still didn’t agree with how Chaos went about getting things done. When he was asked to help with anything that had to do with his personal enemy, he flatly refused, eyes burning with a fury that even its owner couldn’t place. The clan as a whole learned as well that neither dragon seemed to get along with each other and, not wanting to get in the middle of something, they all avoided bringing up one around the other.

Once he managed to ignore the power-hungry guardian, Remmiv could move forward with his new life. There were dragons here who knew nothing of his manic past and who didn’t judge him because of his scars. He had found a new home, one where he could forge his own destiny and create a real life for himself. As a hatchling and young adult he had been looking at the world through a smoky haze, the ashes clouding his vision and the reality of what lay around him. Now that he was away from that toxic environment, living in one that had clear blue skies and healthy foliage around him, he knew that he could live happily here. That had never been an option before. Happiness wasn’t following the lava flows and destroying whatever got in his way. Happiness was waking up and knowing that the day would be green and healthy and beautiful.
