Akari’s claw-tips lightly pushed into the patchwork doll, tugging a few strings taut before dragging it through and slicing the threads. White cotton puffed out from the wound, before the doll began to stitch itself back together, the enchantment repairing the thread fibers themself like a Tundra grandmother fixing a hatchling’s worn-out doll.
Akari grinned up at the visitor who stared at him in shock. Feather replaced by matted tundra-fluff, white stripes and red lace now a carpet of black fur that draped over his body like a messy wig. His green eyes were the only similarity, the only certainty that this was still Akari—that and the tiny mirror doll he now prodded at with his hooked claws, all which were once delicate fingers.
“...A-Akari?”
”Mm.” The black gaoler shoved a claw through the mirror doll’s neck, waiting until the threads repaired before tugging his talon back out with a jerk of his arm.
”A shame, isn’t it?
A skydancer—“ The gaoler closed his eyes, laughing quietly. Sadly. The plush doll’s head went limp.
”—who will never fly again.
