NOTES
WyP0PAu.png
"Kao remembers the accident like it was yesterday. She can recall the thick, heavy clouds of coal dust in the air and the way her throat had closed up as she tried to suppress the urge to summon a light for fear that she’d send the whole mine up in flames.

The cave-in was covered up, she later heard. Something about unsafe mining practises and the worry of lost profit.

Lost profit. Eight dragons had lost their lives in the mine that day, her among the presumed dead. It still makes her shake with rage to think about it.

She waited for days, sitting patiently in the dark and clinging to the slightest hope that someone would come for her. There was no way of knowing how much time had passed, no way of digging her way out when she couldn’t even tell where she had fallen from.

It wasn’t till her belly began to ache and her parched throat plead for water did that tiny spark of hope began to fade.

She’d come to terms with her own death.

Later, if she was asked to recall exactly what had happened, she wouldn’t be able to give a straight answer.

She didn’t know. All she felt was a scorching sensation that began in her mouth; some long suppressed Fire magic yearning for release, perhaps, or some forgotten desperation that ignited a spark deep within her. But all she felt at the time was a pain so agonising she’d almost ripped out her own throat in an effort to make it all stop. She could feel every scale shift, her wings rip, her jaw open impossibly wide--

In a haze of pain, she forgot her hunger and torturous thirst. She forgot that she had been content to sit and wait for her death, there within the bowels of the earth. She forgot to suppress the single, most important instinct taught to all workers on the first day of their shift: never ignite an open flame in a coal mine.

And when she emerged, soot-stained and broken-clawed, from the entrance of the mine hours later, no one recognised her.

Workers paused in their duties. Coal clattered to the floor as wheelbarrows overturned. A rainbow of eyes turned to stare.

Her eyes, previously a soft amber, now blazed with all the brilliant, single-minded fury of a sun. Dark scales and dull wings were cracked, like fragile glass, though there was nothing delicate about the panting, desperate creature that had crawled from Death’s mouth. As she exhaled, sparks ignited along the broken lines, fading quickly as she drew in a ragged breath. Her belly sloshed; as she straightened, one sharp-eyed enough would have gotten a glimpse of a black, viscous liquid lapping at her insides.

She drank in their expressions, most horrified, few reverent.

Those lucky enough to receive the Flamecaller’s blessing rarely survive the transformation, yet here she stood, a living testimony to her own resilience.

Before their frightened gazes, she opened her pitch-dark, tar-sticky maw, and crowed at the sky with delight.

Now, she thought. Now they would pay."

Followed by spirits that attached to her during the mine cave-in; some are other miners, some are something far more ancient.
