Biography

GLAIN - Unofficial Leader

Sepia Lace Anklet Sakura Owl Sepia Lace Waist Frill
Before there was the Arcanist, there was the Icewarden, and it is best not to forget that. Glain has not forgotten, after all. She's held him close in her heart, right next to the haunting whistle of the wind in the mountains, and the soft hush of snow filling the valley. The bitter cold was her best friend when she was young, and the clear, cloudless skies her watchful guardian. Those who say the Arcanist is closer to the stars than the Icewarden are wrong; no one else's skies are so clear, so close.

She almost forgot him when she was young, though, and it haunts her every day, this almost mistake. She let the glowing, glimmering Starfall Isles carry her away, resplendent in their eerie light, fascinating in their mystery. The Isles were temptation incarnate, bathing her in a warmth and curiosity she'd never known before. It was so easy to capture her attention then, when she was young and impressionable, recently adopted and clinging to whatever affection she could find. Her new home seized her heart, and for a long time, she didn't look back.

Being raised by a clan founder did not help matters. Sure, Orane gave Glain warmth and kindness and patience the likes of which she had not experienced in the Southern Icefields. Nothing is more enticing than the new, after all, and for a time, Glain was under Orane's spell. She began to worship the Arcanist alongside her adoptive mother, began to devote herself to his order, started to view him as the ultimate calling. But then she dreamed of the snow-capped peaks and the howling blizzards, and there was a void in her heart that the deity of the Isles could never hope to fill. She told no one what she had seen, how she had felt. Open expression was for the weak, the unambitious. Instead, she clutched her heartache close and converted it into drive, pretending all the while that the enchantment of the Starfall Isles had not yet worn away.

When Orane tried to induct her into the clan's higher ranks, she accepted not out of piety, but out of ambition. She saw power and opportunity behind these offers, a chance to integrate herself more fully in the clan without anyone batting an eye. As the founder's adopted daughter, as what might pass in some clans for a high priestess, she would be respected, maybe even revered. And after that, all she needed was time. Glaciers do not rush, and so Glain kept her steady pace rather than hurrying ahead. Better to plot each move along the way, gathering resources, influence, experience in a meditated fashion. An opportunity would arise with time, she knew. It was just a matter of patience.

There were complications, of course. Falling in love with Eveesa was one, and having children by him another. She hadn't anticipated a brood to look after, especially not three sons with wanderlust in their heart and one daughter with a mind as sharp as Glain's and a tongue to match. Family had not been a part of the plan. Family was a delay. But the opportunity arrived eventually, when her sons had moved on and her daughter was grown. Orane was distracted, possibly even ailing; she would not confirm any sickness with her followers, but there was suspicion among the clan nonetheless. She was not as dedicated in her duties, not as attentive as she once was, and only to Glain did she admit that something felt missing in her life, not that the Arcanist would tell her. He was a god who gave questions, not answers.

Glain saw her chance. She walked through every step of the ritual to beseech the clan's deity, and the only ingredient missing was faith. In the process, her feathers took on a pinkish hue, and her mind fell set into its course: the clan would move to the Southern Icefields. Though Orane resisted, she was too tired to combat Glain' enthusiasm for the move, too distanced from the Arcanist to verify that the words Glain claimed were his truly came from his benevolence. She simply accepted it, placing Glain in charge of the preparations. Within weeks, the clan was sailing across icy seas, on to their new home.

Effectively, Glain is the leader now. Orane is still distant, trapped in her own personal haze, and she has not made an attempt to rule over her clan for quite some time. That suits Glain just fine, though; the Icefields are her homeland, and who better to lead the clan through the icy world than someone born to it, someone with a chill in their soul? Even losing Eveesa to her daughter's claws could not shake her, not with the Icewarden's divine purpose behind her. The Icefields is her home, the clan's home. She will not be ousted, not from these lands, and certainly not from power, and though the older dragons have clear disdain for her, the young hatchlings have grown to revere her. Soon, there will be little opposition left. As it should be.
