Biography

Prime examples of independence ruled her little home. Her parents were giants in the Tundra-led clan. They incorporated their own living spaces on the banks of the Tsunami Flats. Large birds and creatures of the sky would attack them at night. Iris, with her dark scales, was tasked with hunting the sky creatures. The job was unusual in Tidelord’s domain.

She cried herself to sleep when she was left out of a deep-sea dive as a child. This incident forced a wedge between her regal Ashfall-bred mother and her immigrant Arcanite father that never healed. Her mother, an Imperial, couldn’t understand the point of the deep-sea hunts. Dragons had other callings than what their peers thought was important – why submit to mere expectation? Her father, a Guardian, wanted the bickering to stop because he left for his Search at a young age. What of his children, who would need to leave home early too?

One night, Iris slunk into the sea and never returned home.

It never registered to her as the start of her Search. She wanted peace. Adult squabbling unsettled her ears. The sea was one of the few places only she could reach without assistance, so away from her bickering parents she went. Underwater warriors handed off a spare trident to her. Other Guardians looked at her with disdain. No one provided help or assistance. After several close calls against sea monsters, Iris soon found herself lucky to be alive.

Surfacing was her best option. When she realized she had arrived at the Shoredeep Presage – and the Flats were still visible on the horizon’s edge – an insatiable restlessness assailed her. She flew westward, dodging the smoke billowing from the Ashfall Waste. That was not her destination. Iris wandered the Windswept Plateau and briefly took up a series of jobs. First was farming at the Millmeadows, then archivist efforts at the Aergate. At the Cloudsong, she heard rumors among the Cloudsong about a great scientist that had learned how to reverse the curse of fate.

Her ears perked up. The restlessness grew stronger. She scoured the Plateau, eventually finding a speck of obsidian in between the bamboo shoots of the Zephyr Steppes. Her heartbeat rammed in her chest as she approached. This Fae looked up at her endearingly, lime-colored beady eyes twinkling in the dusk’s light. Her limbs grew heavy and weak. Her breath caught in her chest.

This was who she needed to be with.

A sense of calm washed over her as the Fae explained that he was a fugitive. He had orders to leave by the next nightfall and never return. At dawn, they left together. The Fae’s name was Leni. She didn’t ask him about his home, or anything else that would make him fly off her neck and never return. She couldn’t afford to. She carried him all the way to the Rotrock Rim, in the heart of the Scarred Wasteland.

It was Shiori and Hafsa who found them cowering behind bones to get away from ooze monsters. When Iris was introduced to Anya, with Leni still on her back, the stench of battery acid was strong in the air. Iris forced the bile back down her throat and insisted that she and her mate were to be allowed refuge and never to be forcibly separated. The others agreed to the terms. No one would be foolish enough to separate a Guardian from their Charge, after all.

She learned various hunting and scavenging techniques from the trio. With Leni, she built a separate lair, and they had a nest together. Their firstborn son, Valentin, stayed with them – finding his call to the Search much slower than his siblings did. Not even months in when he met Tremolo was he called for the Search. Her path came early.

Iris’ worry was never alleviated. When Valentin returned from a trip to the main lair, he was beside himself about an invention meant to revolutionize the Wyrmwound. She attempted to embrace her son, but a puff of red smoke emerged from his mouth. She wasn’t the same afterward. For three nights she had increasingly vivid dreams of Anya’s generator. The last thing she remembered was the end of the dream, and the brilliant red glow basking over the horizon...

After awakening, Iris discovered she was the only one who had zero recollection of the physical journey to the Wyrmwound. Her dreams have been plagued by strange images of unfamiliar dragons since.

She knows not what to make of them.
