Starseekers
An Arcane Subspecies
An Arcane Subspecies
There is some debate as to whether or not these dragons are known as the Starseekers or Star Seekers. The first would imply that they were named after the house, Starseeker, while the second could perhaps lead one to presume that the house was, in fact, named after the dragon species. However, there is one fact that is clearly evident, the colors of these dragons closely resemble that of the Starseeker house emblem. Starseekers (or Star Seekers), are closely attuned to the stars. They have an uncanny sense of where certain constellations are in the night sky. They are able to spot a comet flying through the air before most dragons even realize it’s there. A night doesn’t pass where a Starseeker isn’t gazing up towards the heavens, charting the stars. Some say that Starseeker dragons are connected to the stars, that when they are born into the world a star is created in the night sky just for them. This, what some scholars say, is why they spend all their time studying the sky because they are trying to find their own personal star. It can not be proved whether this is true or not, as no recorded Starseeker has ever found their star. |
She's always known the stories of Starseekers' origins - childhood retellings by parents and grandparents, awkwardly twisted inaccurate interpretations by other flights, or thrown her way sometimes as an insult by those who thought Starseekers arrogant and selfish. She's always known, but also always found the stories lacking.
Why strain your eyes and mind in an effort to understand, when all you needed to do was feel? Why try to map the courses, count the constellations, estimate the sizes - the calculations were always, always wrong, she knew - when the beating of the stars echoed in every breath you took, every movement of the world, every second that passed?
For her, the starbeat was the first thing she heard, the first thing she felt, the first thing she was.
And then, one day, a discord came in the slow, ever-steady beats: sudden, frantic and hurried, like a hatchling flapping its wings madly as it was left to the mercy of the air and magic for the first time. A false star born, the imitation choking on the magnificence of the real thing, yet eager - no, desperate - to match the distant giants of the sky.
And yet... as weak and fake as it was, perhaps this star was hers. As the frantic beating petered out, growing steadier yet still hurried, like a heart after a run, she grinned to herself.
All she had to do now... was wait.
