Artemesia was tossed aside from the moment she was born. She was not 'beautiful' like her mother and regarded as imperfect. From the second she was old enough to understand, Artemisia felt that her coloring was a blessing in disguise; her siblings were not so lucky. Day by day they disappeared and Artemisia was left with the notion that if she didn't find a way out of the manor she would vanish within its walls like the rest of her brood. Her father came to collect her, as he did all his other children before her. She cowered back from him and he felt a soft frown sprout on his lips; he'd never get used to that. Once in a great while there would be a child born that seemed to... feel the shade lurking around them and it always caught him off guard. But still, he must do this. For him, and for his beloved wife. Artemisia tried to push herself into the shadows but unfortunately a stone wall blocked her path. In comparison to her fathers hand, the wall was warm and inviting. Emelio's flesh was freezing to the touch, any trace of life long seeped out of it, and it chilled her to her core. She was 'guided' (if one could call dragging a struggling child 'guiding') to the gilded room that her mother disappeared into every night. The walls were carpetted with plush red carpet save a few tiles surrounding a large clawfoot tub that emitted a darkness that shook Artemesia even more. Her body trembled; this was a Death room. She was young but even she understood that. Had she waited too long? Was this where it was going to end? Tears brimmed in her eyes and she screamed, lashing out at her father who, in surprise, released her for just a moment. She tried to run but the heavy door shut on its own, sealing her within the gilded room with her father and her mother, clothed in soft robes from across the room. Her heart was racing wildly as she tugged on the door, but then, ever so gently above her own screams, came another sound. It was almost angelic in nature; a soft choir of voices that all came from one source. Ruby serenaded her terrified child into silence, her voice curling around the girl like a gentle suffocation. Artemmesia wanted to run but her body wouldn't let her; she was entranced by that lovely voice and could feel her own body begin to head towards her mother. Her mind was screaming. RUN! But her body wouldn't listen and her mind felt foggy. She watched herself helplessly get closer and closer to certain death, helpless, and even if she could move, where would she go...? Her eyes suddenly tore away from her mother and traced a small sliver of moonlight up to a window. It was the first time she'd seen any glimpse of the outside and the moon... it was more beautiful than she could imagine. More beautiful than the alluring song of her mother. In an instant, the spell broke and her short legs carried her rapidly towards that window. It was the only chance of freedom she had, and she took it without thinking. Her mother hissed from somewhere behind her but she couldn't be stopped before her body burst through the window and began the free-fall. Artemesia had never been granted the opportunity to fly; nobody had taught her and she thought her wings were useless. But in this moment, free-falling with the fresh cool air of the night bursting through her hair, she felt... terrified and enthralled all in one short burst of time. The moon danced along her face and she smiled. And then the pain came. Her body struck the ground and she cried out in surprise, a sharp, distinct pain shooting up through her wing and leg. She couldn't stay but moving was so painful. Still, with all the strength she had, Artemesia began her slow escape from the bloody castle that had been her home. She left it all behind; even if she died now, she would die free. Hours of agony later brought her out of the tangled woods. Her body was cut up by the bramble and small trails of blood leaked out behind her as she moved. She was tired; a kind of exhaustion filling her mind that she'd never felt before. And it was then, under the light of the stars, that a savior appeared before her. The guardian large and foreboding; she'd never seen a guardian before. If she'd been more awake she might have been scared but instead she simply cast a pitiful smile up at the woman. Her legs finally gave out beneath her and she collapsed in a pitiful pile before Quetz. It was fate; any later and Artemisia might not have made it. Jane rushed to the small dragon's side, worried to even touch the frail girl in fears that she might shatter like glass. The girl's wings were clearly under-developed and mangled from the fall; Quetz wondered if the girl would ever fly again even if she were to survive. But she was in good hands now; the nurse was more than capable of handling wounds. It was only a matter of spirit now; Quetz could heal the wounds but it was up to Artemesia to pull through. There was no telling what this child had been through, but with the right care perhaps she would live long enough to tell her story... |
