Leaves rustle and branches creak above you as you creep carefully through the tangled landscape. Each time you hear the sounds, you turn quickly, not wanting to be caught unawares. Each time, you see a blur of movement out of the corner of your eye, nothing more. It keeps you on edge. Jumpy. (You wonder how whatever is making those sounds can be so loud and yet so invisible here, though of course the thick foliage provides camouflage.) When finally you see him, he has snuck up on you silently. You stand from the stream you were bent over, turn, and he stands in the shadow of a tree not five taillengths away. You look at each other for long moments, neither moving, and then finally he turns away and melds into the undergrowth with the grace and silence of a large cat. You do not see him again. |
