Pity is rare in the Plaguewastes- but so is care. The Triumvirate of Bone were always a collection of oddities, their leaders most of all. Agust never had a name, not until her Charge gave her one. They said that naming something stripped the fear from it, and from the unknown, and so for the years that she led her faction they all called her by pet names. Sweetling, Darling, Gloss. Sugar was the most popular, in its endless irony; because it didn’t fit her onyx-black scales but it sure as hell matched the bleached bones strung around her neck. It took the coming of sirens to the Triumvirate for things to change-- Piper looked at her for a while, one night, both their faces lit by fire off a downed caravan, and said “you look like august, to me. Heat and cold water; secrets told at dusk and kept by midnight.” And she said, “Alright,” and so it was. Toxicant’s jaw was half-gone when Agust found her ripping the flesh off rotting roadkill and swallowing it whole. All she could manage were hisses and screams, for the first few months, until the curse of the Contagion stopped thinking of her as an intruder and started doing what it could to fix what it had broken. It took four months for Toxicant to heal enough to speak, and the first thing she says is “I’ve been calling you June, in my head. What should I call you?” and Agust laughs, a little, because Idol was June (more temperate than her), and she thinks back to the time they found another traveler and asked about the Triumvirate and heard, “it shattered, have you not heard, no one got out alive, thank the Plaguebringer--” and she says “my name is Agust.” And so it is. They make it to the Orchard of Thorns, eventually. There isn’t much pomp or circumstance for their return, but Vanparys catches Toxicant in a bear hug and sneaks a tart into her knapsack as they’re entering the Market, and Apathy says, “well, thank everything, another swordswoman with a good head on her,” and invites Agust to help her train hatchlings on the waxing moons, and Agust thinks she could have a family again. When Toxicant doesn’t have the strength, Agust attends diplomatic meetings in her stead. She is polite, and warm, and laughs at all the right times, and she wears her dress that doesn’t stain and keeps her claws and fangs filed to points that glint like knives in the candlelight. She misses her boys, but that’s alright. Everyone misses someone, here. (And a caravan stops in the Orchard, late in the wane. The Melting Court sing a song of vengeance and heartache, and when they stop the beat that continues is not their own. “So could we, Pipes?” she asked, years ago before anything, “Enchant people the way you do, i mean. I don’t have much of a singing voice.” “Normally, no, but with... with the power the chargebond gave you, sugar, you could do a lot of things.” “Is it wrong to think it sounds nice to have that sort of control?” Agust unbuttons her cloak, allows it to fall open over her shoulders. Necklaces of dragon bone clink against each other as she shifts, throws her arms out wide and her head back like she’s embracing the song. The mask that she wears covers the entirety of her upper face, elaborate obsidian filigree glinting in the light of her own halo. She smiles. Takes a deep breath; makes glorious, terrified eye contact with Piper where he’s standing off to the side and struggling with tears that he doesn’t know the reason for, with Idol where he's stopped dead at the edge of the clearing-- And begins. ”let me-- make me your god!”) |
