The days passed by her in a blur. It was hard for her to keep track of days and nights. Between the blink of an eye and the next, it seemed seasons had passed and the world had changed. Dragons came and dragons went. Some gave her a cursory glance, others wary, but she didn’t mind. Couldn’t find it in herself to mind.

There were some who talked to her. Who sat beneath her stone paws, and spoke of their days. Lonely souls in hope of company, lost souls in hope of guidance. And when that happened, sometimes she felt something stir in the depths of her memory, a feeling of familiarity and comradery.

But the feeling always passed as quickly as it came. It might’ve bothered her in the beginning, but it was better this way. It let her focus on her duties, let her protect this clan, this land and temple with all she could and not be distracted by the trivialities of her mind.

Most days were peaceful, time slipping away with the turn of the seasons, but some days she didn’t even know what set her off.

A blink, then two, and before she knew it, something had changed. A cold breeze in the air, the clank of metal. Shifty looks, and muttered insults. Bad manners or veiled threats. And then she was leaping forward, stone constraints falling away, a roar sounding from her throat.

It was the only time she felt truly alive, the memory of something rousing with the heat of battle and adrenaline pouring through her veins. It was what she was made to do, to ward off evil, to protect and defend. And as the last of the threat faded away, the land safe for another night, Komainu would settle back on her perch with a contented sigh, and let the days pass her by.

Sometimes in the silence, she thought she heard something. Distant cries of war, of the clash of steel and a heavy weight in her hands. But whenever she grasped at the words, tried to remember why and how, the memory always slipped through her fingers like water, and she was left bereft of something she never knew she had.

During the cold, dark nights and the wind whispering through the trees, she thought she felt the ghost of pain across her back, phantom blades that tore at her and left her bare. Then a whisper of voices and the sinking waves and a blank nothingness that pulled her in. But the feeling was muted, distant, as if it were a dream far away.

A life away.

But this was her life now. Even if her dreams occasionally felt too real, if she woke with a name she no longer recalled on the tip of her tongue and an ache for something she couldn’t describe. She was content. The world passed her by in a blur. Autumn changed to winter which changed to spring; leaves fell and budded and grew, and Komainu breathed deeply.

This world was hers, and hers to protect.
