Upon first impression, Chalazias seems aloof and disinterested, bored and above the world around her. But something about her catches the eye. And not in the luminous way charisma attracts the light - though she's certainly smooth-talking and charming when she wishes to be - but more like how one naturally tracks a tiger, even if it's safely contained behind a fence. There's something about her that tenses one's muscles when she's in the room.

The reason for this is that Chalazias' noble gracefulness is a thin sheet over her anger, which bubbles like water about to boil. She's not going to hurt those around her, of course, but she wants to damage something. She's constantly seething at her situation, at the injustice; trapped, not just for life but death as well, tied to a stupid goblet and forced to live out eternity in awful, grimy ruins. Who wouldn't be angry?

She's nice enough to those around her, if clearly uninterested in their plights, and carries her aristocratic habits into her afterlife. More that that, she's the kind who is never quite satisfied; once she reaches something, gains something, there's nowhere to look but the next milestone. No one ever taught her how to be content. But there's a hardness to her, a flinty resolution. She's the kind of dragon who always gets what she wants in the end. She will have the last word. Even if it kills her.

Chalazias grew up an illuminated noble; childhoods spent slinking about royal courts and sparring words; preening and flattering and lying. She was good at it, noble from a respected house and bloodline, a life lined in silver cutlery and porcelain luxuries. She became skilled at manipulating her way through the dragons around her - convincing everyone she'd dropped a goal only to incidentally achieve it in the end. She knew how precarious court politics and life could be, and never quite felt secure in her wealth, material or reputational - she knew how quickly a soured duke or viscount could fall from grace.

As a child, she was also fascinated by shiny things. She'd collect metallic and glass objects, which were plentiful in that environment, even at a young age often innocently sneaking silverware from the table. Her family bemusedly called her magpie and brushed her tendencies off as childhood impulsivity at first. Until she became old enough for pinching jewels to become unacceptable. At that point, she became more subtle, more creative; why risk stealing when you could trick a countess into giving you her trinkets?

From a young age, she had a large hoard. Chalazias was never quite able to look back, or see what she had beneath her; only forward, towards the next goal, next target. Ambition that was respectable, if dangerous. Ambition that would become her hubris. She glittered; she wanted to own everything that glittered. She thought that, one day, if she owned enough, she might feel like something in her life was finally, actually hers. Finally earned.

She was popular in the court - which was a bit of a risky business in itself - as others noticed her skill. Somewhat, anyway. She was pretty good at not letting others realise they were being swindled. But many knew she was clever, and her loyalty would be an asset. Chalazias, however, was not the loyal type; she had no qualms about turning on those that cared about her. She believed in justice, plenty - but her idea of justice was as malleable as water and always seemed to reflect a way that benefited her.

Her downfall came in the form of a goblet; a favour exchanged with a countess where Chalazias thought she still had the upper hand. A shining sangria goblet and wine that tasted a little too much like her own medicine, and Chalazias was left dead in the night. Furthermore, death wasn't enough of a revenge; whether that countess knew it or not, the goblet was cursed; Chalazias' soul is tied to it, whether she wants it or not. As the goblet passed hands, Chalazias' ghost went with it - through a noble family, a diplomatic exchange, through several generations and flight territories to stashed away in a hoard in the Reedcleft Ascent. Even as the residents passed and the centuries trudged on and the palace crumbled, Chalazias waited, in seething invisible silence, for something. Anything.

Now, after a necromantic spell gone wrong wrought her back into a physical form, Chalazias can be seen and heard after several centuries. But she's still angry. She knows that wine was poisoned, even if she can't ever prove it; she's still tied to that damn goblet. She carries this anger like a physical weight, a chain, a knife; when she snarls at the living dragons to hide her jealousy; when she snaps at Protathlis. She still can't leave. She still can't truly die.
