Biography

Elwing
tranquil ; empathetic ; meticulous
teamaker

A low, cool flame streams from the throat of an elegant imperial. It wraps about the base of a thick, black iron kettle, hanging from a long, weathered hook in the ceiling. The cave is spacious and well-lit, shallow with a wide mouth so the sunlight streams in. Grass breaches the lip of the ceiling so the divide between inside and outside is blurred. Butterflies flutter in and out. Along the walls are metal shelves, installed carefully and lined with large glass jars, each full of dried leaves and flowers.

The dragoness lifts the heavy kettle from its hook with her talons, tipping the boiling water into a pot before her and placing the lid on top of it. It's a peaceful ritual. She sits on her hindquarters, body erect, simply watching the small spire of steam swirl into the air. "Morning, El! I've brought fresh clippings," the gardener, Este, is at the cave entrance, and holds up a large cloth bundle. Errant sprigs stuck their green leaves out from between the folds. Elwing smiles, the yellow markings beneath her eyes crinkling in delight. "Ah, lovely!" she exclaims, taking the bundle, "I'll sort them at once."

She turns to a benchtop which sits against the far wall, a few open jars sitting atop its polished wooden surface. Little muslin scraps are scattered about, along with piles of tea leaves. A few of the scraps have been filled and tied into tiny bags, each tied with a notecard carefully labelled in delicate writing. She places the wrapped bundle in the centre of the bench. On the left is the last end of a sweet loaf, along with the red cloth it had been wrapped in. It is this that the dragoness reaches for, inhaling the sweet aroma of nutmeg and honey. She places the slice on a little wooden plate and passes it to her guest. "Stay for tea?" she asks, gesturing to the teapot. Este shakes her head, "I'll take a bit of your sweet bread, if you don't mind, but the ivy needs some attention today and I'm already behind ... and you have work to do, don't you?" she says, eye twinkling. A faint flush rises in Elwing's face. "Take the last of the bread! I won't finish it," she pushes the loaf into Este's talons while the gardener laughs, "I'll see you later!"

The teamaker turns back to her bundling table. Jasmine, ceylon, hibiscus, orange peel, cinnamon and clove, assam, jade green. Leaning forwards, she checks the bundles already tied and packaged. All there. She leans back on her haunches and sighs. Her fellow teamaker, the unnamed dragon, is due to arrive in the next few hours. For him, everything must be ready, and everything must be perfect.

Elwing, from the Sindarin "Star foam", was the mother of Elrond. She threw herself into the sea to protect one of the Silmarils and was turned into a great white bird by Ulmo.

Elwing is the clan's tea-maker. Her little cave, situated between the ruins and Este's garden, is a frequent stop for many of the clan members, who find her manner soothing. She listens to all manner of complaints and joys throughout her day.

“Drink your tea slowly and reverently, as if it is the axis on which the world earth revolves - slowly, evenly, without rushing toward the future”

Relationships
Elwing has good relationships with most of the members of Clan Galad. She will often take more delicate teas out to Irmo, by his willow tree, where they will sit and discuss the pros and cons of her new blends.

Vana and Este will sometimes ask for tea to be brought to patients, which is always done with delight.

Her dearest friend is the teamaker from Clan Shikoire, who is nameless. She calls him Red, and always seems brighter when he has been.
Story
Hundreds of years of tea-tasting gives one a very refined palate. Elwing's father, a seasoned veteran, would always enjoy a cup of tea upon his return from battle, and she delighted in making it for him. Growing older, she experimented in creating her own teas and spent much of her time perfecting her art. She found that it brought her great peace.

It was Clan Galad's physician, Vana, who convinced her to come. Offering the dragoness a tea cave of her own was enough to bring her to the clan.

Now, she spends most of her time teamaking or socialising. When not at home, she is often with Clan Shikoire.
