Their mother watches as they play with the feathers that line her mane. She can't help but smile at her first clutch. She can't wait to raise them. For them to become shamans like her. To see what she can see, to hear what she can hear. She couldn't wait to see their potential.

She is already thinking of the ways she can train them. She doesn't think it will take much to help them unlock their potentials. To her they seem to already hold the ability...

"Unworthy."

The door swings open and the self proclaimed Raven King is there. White eyes stare down at the now still hatchlings. Judging. Hating.

"Unworthy. Get rid of them."

Their mother is quick to scoop them up into her arms. She rushes of the hut she called home. She would still teach them. Just not here.

The deep, rippling ocean waves crashed against the shores of the Focal Point at the Starfall Isles. Few dragons dared to sail these waters, and fewer still ever succeeded. For Talin, however, he thrived upon the sea. Known throughout the clan as Captain of the Red Sea, he was easily lost in the fresh scent of salt and the promise of monthlong journeys guided only by moonlight. As such, his quests required more than skill and thievery, but passion—passion beyond those seeking treasures, glory, and recognition; instead, he demanded of his crew passion for adventures in which the risks outweighed the rewards. What could be more thrilling, he thought, than taking a chance on the unknown?

His vessel Lady Luck, named for his fierce belief in luck always being on his side, was both imposing and welcoming—a fearsome structure that towered over the largest Imperials and Guardians at port. Who dares come aboard? it seemed to ask. Who wishes to sail with the Captain of the Red Sea until we run out of light and the memory of land is lost to the ocean depths? Many came to see such a marvel; few remained long enough to witness true magic. His crew, a hodgepodge of rookie sailors and pirates, of clan outcasts and exiled traitors, were the only ones brave enough to embark on such uncertain tides.

Some whisper that Talin’s affinity (or, perhaps, addiction) for his adventurous sailing stems from a troubled past, one that Talin hardly acknowledges. “Wasn’t ever wanted by my father,” he’d nonchalantly reminisce, “so the ol’ couple by the Crystal Pools took me in. Bounced around clans for so long now, seems like they’re all a part of me.” And they were. Fragmented memories of his lost mother and remnants of each clan he stayed with haunted Talin until the line between his Plague origins and his present-day shenanigans blurred.

And then there were the birds. They were, naturally, a far greater comfort to Talin than his crew ever was. From their ticklish nibbling and pecking to the perpetual freedom they represented, Talin adored the company of the fluttering little creatures. Bathed in the early morning rays, he’d adjust his scarf so the seeds hidden within would be available to any wandering bird. And in the evenings, berries, crumbs, and acorns filled his woodbasket where an array of sparrows, ravens, and robins tucked themselves in for the night. The shadows concealed Talin’s contented smile. He was very close to becoming a permanent nesting ground for the birds. The crew thought this was quite eccentric, but (wisely) did not comment.

Talin’s most memorable quest took him through the Blacksand Annex, where mystical and magical creatures born of fire and embers swarmed Lady Luck. Several birds aboard chirped in excitement, flapping in whirls of colored feathers and star-speckled plumage. After adjusting his apparel and the healer’s reference strapped to his hip, Talin descended the ship to explore the glittering obsidian coastline. Emeralds, rubies, and gold adorned the steaming land, soaked with sea mist. It meant little to him, for treasure was the easiest currency to trade, but his crew greedily swept up everything they could, and Talin simply relished his accomplishment.

When he returned to Ashe’s territory, a sense of calmness enveloped Talin as he breathed in the familiar scent of cinder and skulls. He traded long into the night, using his charm and charisma like a smooth and easygoing pirate (though he would never call himself such). Dragons liked him, were drawn to his wit and articulate nature. The black surface of the ocean glimmered gently. Surrounded by the lapping waves and birdies nestled into their wings, Talin was lulled to sleep. His dreams carried him away to more confusing times, when clan after clan after clan accepted, rejected, feared, and loved him. Murmurs of a Raven King were lost to hazy sounds until one clear voice emerged above the others—his mother, shushing him as they hid.

The following morning, Talin’s dreams would be nothing more than foggy shapes and disembodied tones. With his groggy crew and a happy parrot on his shoulder, he set for the sea once more, hollering jubilant orders to help them reach extravagant destinations. For miles beyond the small fishing port his name echoed in the winds—the only captain that can successfully lead a vessel through the Blacksand Annex—passed between gossiping whispers and nervous glances. With the wind guiding the sails, Talin left the harbor to explore a path only he knew how to navigate, where his imagination conjured up the beginnings of a magnificent dance with the sea, towards an undiscovered horizon.
