She adored the inquisitive nature of youthful students. Others told her that she could secure her legacy at the Palace, but she always laughed and said she preferred her students. Where else would she find such delightful questions, wondering about the theories that generations of mages before could not answer? She decided that it was her duty to nurture their curiosity and ensure her students would have bright futures.

Her first student, a sweet tundra, became a renowned healer. Last she heard, he was considered a miracle-worker, called to other clans when their own healers are stumped. She is so proud of him, that he outgrew her lessons and could have his own students and use his knowledge to save others.

The next focussed on potions, a vague area of study that she also couldn't keep up with. Once again, her student surpassed her, moving on to teachers who could keep up and answer her questions. The clever ridgeback ended up with the Palace position others dream of, ensuring the security of her family for generations to come.

Students came and went, and she remembered each fondly. They would write to her, and each letter was carefully kept in a box.

The next student is a curious fae, one who has questions about everything. His parents only have so much patience before they beg her to take him as a student.

"Curiosity is a gift," she says, accepting the hatchling as a student.

She smiles as he asks his questions about everything. Healing, potions, poisons, the fae reads every book and has questions about every topic. She tells him about her old students and where they are now. He listens, wondering how to gain their prestige. She tells him that it was their hard work and skill, and he promises that he will work just has hard.

She tells herself that she doesn't have favorites, but she is very fond of the hatchling and his determination.

The questions get more detailed. She isn't surprised. Her students outgrow her every time. He asks about abstract theories that she cannot answer, about book titles that she does not recognize. She does her best, directing him to collections in the Tourmaline Archives that might help. She writes to her other students. Books that would be off-limits to most dragons are open to her, courtesy of her past students.

Some students express concern. She ignores those letters.

She accompanies her student to the Tourmaline Archives, using the time to brush up on her own knowledge and catch up with her old students. She missed them, she realizes, and it's easy to leave the fae with his books as she spends some time in a tavern exchanging stories.

As time goes on, she begins to realize why the others are concerned. Her student is an Arcane dragon, beginning to ask about topics that she could not answer, but she did not need to be an Arcane dragon to realize that his curiosity was more than purely academic.

He asks about the nature of free will, and if it's possible to control another dragon, if it can be subtle enough that the other dragon never notice. She tries to steer the conversation to lighter topics, but he refuses to move. They go back and forth, her student demanding an answer until she snaps and says she will not speak about it any longer.

Her old student mentions that a book was stolen from the Tourmaline Archives after they visited, and when she repeated this, the fae doesn't reply. She doesn't bother searching his rooms. She already knows.

As with every student before, the two of them realize that he is beyond her. He is not a wide-eyed hatchling anymore. There is nothing left for her to teach him. They have to part ways, but this time, she doesn't know where her darling student will go.

He will be great, she knows, but he will not be good.

She watches him pack, carefully handling the stolen books from the Tourmaline Archives. She wonders what is written in those books, that he took them in the first place.

"Thank you," he says.

She nods. There's nothing to say. She has little pride in what he's become or what he will accomplish.

When he leaves, she's left with an empty lair and a dull pain. Sleep doesn't come easy, and the night is filled with fear of what she let into the world.

The next morning, she vows to never take another student.

Her student never writes, and she is grateful.

There are whispers of a fae dragon, one that is the King of his clan and beloved by all his people. She hears this and wonders if she was wrong.

She chooses to believe so, even though she knows otherwise.

Still, she does not take another student. Parents beg her, scholars travel from faraway lands, but she refuses.

Her darling fae's portrait hangs in her lair. If she ever doubts, she looks at him and remembers the monster she created.

Knowledge can be used for good or evil, and she will never again help another in their quest for evil.
