Fulfillment His father’s eyes were narrowed in contempt, as always when he set eyes on his youngest son. Or second-youngest living son now. Hanami looked down on the nest in which his three newly hatched siblings were huddled together. Two females and one male. The male was a Mirror like his mother, the two females were Guardians like himself and his father. His mother’s look was full of pride but also sadness. All their children had gone to serve the Gladekeeper. That was all except one. Hanami had listened to his father’s indoctrinations about duty, honor and glory that came with choosing the path of Exaltation. But in the end, he had defied his wishes. Because he knew deep within his heart that this was not his destiny. He had never seen his father so angry before that fateful day when he told him that his charge was waiting for him here. His father who as a Guardian should have understood his son’s choice the best was the one who was the least understanding. If it wasn’t for his mother, he might have been disowned and thrown out of the Sanctuary. But she intervened. She loved all her children equally and accepted their choices no matter what they were. And luckily his father loved his mate. So he relented. But that didn’t mean he accepted his son’s choice. Well, Hanami thought, his father was in for another disappointment. Because Hanami had always known that one of his siblings would be his charge, the one he would have to protect and watch over. He had been waiting for years. Watched his siblings ascent to the ranks of the Gladekeeper’s warriors. But this time, it would be different. A strange unrest had unsettled his sleep for weeks now. And when his parents had retreated to the nesting grounds, his days were haunted by a strange uneasiness, too. Something or rather someone was coming. He was sure his long and agonizing wait was over. When he had first come to greet his new siblings, he had been shivering with anticipation. But all three of them had been asleep. They hadn’t even opened their eyes yet. Delight had been displaced by disappointment and later fear. What if he had been wrong? And this bundle of hatchlings would grow up to serve the Gladekeeper like so many of their siblings before them? After some more or less sleepless nights he had come to terms with the current circumstances. He’d have to wait until his siblings were old enough to make their own decision. Yes, he had had some sort of premonition but this was a “pas de deux”. His charge was another breathing living being with a mind and will of its own. They’d have to find and accept each other. As his father turned and left the nesting ground Hanami sighed in relief. He hadn’t even realized how tense he had been. His mother smiled at him reassuringly before she left to follow her mate. Now, Hanami was alone with the sleeping huddle of hatchlings. He wondered if he’d ever have offspring of his own. Probably not. When he, too, turned around to leave, the dark female Guardian opened her eyes for the first time. They were a dark shade of green, darker than his own. In color, she resembled their mother though her skin and wings were more the color of night than dusk. The runes on her body sparkled in the dim sunlight. Hanami stood transfixed while his little sister struggled to stand on her feet. He bent down his neck to help her but she didn’t need his help. Wobbling slightly, she stood on her own four feet, stretching her head upwards to nudge his nose. Hanami smiled as he felt the tiny warm snout on his face. His wait was over, she had finally stepped into his life. All would be well. |
Information Name // Hanami Role // Protector Personality/Background // Hanami is a quiet and gentle dragon despite his fierce appearance. Nonetheless, he is a formidable warrior like his father and sworn to protect his charge and the Sanctuary. Some are fooled by his placid behavior, they will never make that mistake twice. Hanami was the first of Fahlyn’s and Antafes’ children to stay at the Sanctuary. His father never really accepted his son’s choice and his resentment has greatly hurt Hanami. He mostly keeps to himself, trying not to interfere with the Wardens let by his father or give the slightest impression he would be a rival to his father’s authority. The other Wardens accept him though, as they know the power of the search and that you cannot resist it. The birth of his sister who is his charge has finally brought joy into his life. He doesn’t know what path she will choose but he will go wherever she goes and lay down his life hers if need be. Friends and Foes: Hanami has very few friends and hardly any enemies. He greatly dislikes his father which is a mutual feeling but truly loves his mother. Despite his father’s resentment he counts many of the Wardens among his friends, and he is closest to Tyr. Both Tyr and Hanami are still rather young and spend a lot of time together hunting. Charge: His younger sister Nightshade is his charge. The young female Guardian is beautiful, determined and strong. She has all the qualities of a leader but she is also very headstrong. The siblings share a close bond, and whatever destiny awaits Nightshade, her brother will always be at her side making sure she is safe. |
