SENTINEL
mercenary | monster-hunter | she/her

ABOUT
‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾
Sentinel has had many jobs over the course of her life, but her career can most simply be summed up as 'mercenary'. She's exceedingly good at capturing and killing things, especially large and dangerous things, and this is a skillset that she markets shamelessly. Most of her clients hire her for protection while travelling, or as extra security for special events, but occasionally she is contracted by clans who have problems with monsters, sometimes even emperors, encroaching on their territory. Being a bodyguard pays the bills, but it's the big hunting jobs that Sen enjoys the most.
Though she usually works alone, Sentinel does have regular clients, and an odd rotation of other mercs she gets along with well enough to split profits with if a job requires a little extra help. One of her steadiest employers is a secretive organization based out of the Sunbeam Ruins called The Darkened Sun. From what Sen can gather, they're building their base of operations in the sewers beneath the city, and after centuries of disuse, the tunnels have become home to a wide host of 'vermin' that well-to-do dragons may not want to sully their claws disposing of. Though she is a shadow dragon, Sentinel uses the sun to hunt, refracting light like a magnifying glass through her augmented wings to disorient and burn her opponents. This is hard to do underground, though, so for the Darkened Sun jobs, Sentinel typically works with two other dragons: a knife-wielding spiral and a grizzled old tank of a guardian.
That is, until they betrayed her and left her for dead. The three were hired to track down and return -at any costs- a strange dragon. Their handler called it a 'gaoler', like the Icewarden's ancient children of legend, and told them to be exceedingly careful: it was prone to sudden and violent outbursts.
Sentinel found the gaoler first and backed it down a dead-end tunnel, but it simply curled into a ball with its tail over its eyes and whimpered. Sentinel may be a killer-for-hire, but she draws the line at attacking things that can't -or won't- fight back. She hesitated to strike, and her teammates saw. Believing she'd gone soft, they collapsed the tunnel behind her, trapping her with the gaoler and leaving her for dead. Sentinel was bent on revenge against the other two, both for abandoning her and abandoning the job, but something about the look in the odd dragon's eyes made her hesitant to send it back to the Darkened Sun. There would be other jobs, always more beasts to hunt, so she dug their way out of the Hewn City and let the gaoler go its own way unhindered.
Sentinel planned to bide her time with revenge, taking other jobs and building up her strength to strike when the other two least expected it. She'd heard rumors of a so-called 'peaceful emperor' in Dragonhome, and decided to make her way there to see if there was a bounty on its head. The gaoler, for its part, decided to follow Sen at a distance, sticking to the shadows but never straying far enough to lose her. If Sen noticed, something inspired her to leave it be, so long as it remained harmless. It was kind of nice not to travel alone for once, after all.
