Background: It is one thing to believe the spirits of your ancestors move on to another plane of existence upon death. It is quiet another to view that plane with the naked eye. Haleth was born into a sect of Fae tribes on the outskirts of both Shadow and Light territories, in between the Hewn City and the Foxfire Brambles.

Heavily isolated from other dragon clans, the tribes had developed their own customs and beliefs revolving around the interplay of light and shadow. The driving force behind these ideas was the fact that their territory lay upon an ancient graveyard...and the spirits of the fallen did not rest quietly.

Though very few could see and commune with these spirits, all were able to feel their presence and see the mark they left upon the land. Elaborate ceremonies and rituals were conceived, involving numerous decorative masks and offerings to the departed. One of the main ceremonies stated newborns should be blessed by the rays of the first crescent moon after their birth, providing protection from the spirits lurking in the shadows.

And so, when she was merely a week old, Haleth's parents traveled deeper into the shadowed lands until they reached the Forum of the Obscured Crescent. As was customary, they dipped the newborn into the silty waters of the Forum's pool just as the crescent moon reached its peak overhead.

For one brief, terrifying moment, the waters churned, almost as if the pool were rejecting the hatchling within...or trying to pull her deeper. Yet it passed as quickly as it came, and soon Haleth's parents put it out of their minds as they bundled their child back up and began the journey home.

No one noticed the change, at first. She had only been a week old, after all, before her journey to the Forum. It was common for infants to babble at nothing, to play pretend with individuals who were not really there, and to them Haleth was such a child.

It wasn't until she managed to summon a Wraith Hound when she was three years old that the tribe began to take notice of her. After questioning the child further, and receiving eerily accurate information on loved ones who had passed away, the other Fae realized what was occurring.

The ritual had opened a pathway for a dormant ability to fully manifest within Haleth. What others believed to be imaginary friends- the simple imaginings of a hatchling's mind -were actually the spirits of dragons long since dead...

Few dragons among the Fae tribes possessed both an aptitude for battle and the ability to summon spirits. Only a handful had been born over the last century. They were sought after and prized above all else, rising quickly through the ranks to become hallowed Witch Doctors. These individuals were tasked with appeasing the spirits. Of restoring the balance between the world of the living...and the world of the dead.

It was this role that Haleth grew to fill. Her knowledge and power grew rapidly with each passing year, fed by the support of her tribe. Under the watchful eye of her trainers, Haleth began to learn hexes and voodoo spells, fine tuning her summoning along the way. She learned how to feed off of the life-force of her enemies, how to encourage a spirit to haunt selected targets or lay them to rest instead.

By age twenty, Haleth manged to manifest the forms of dead dragons as well as place their souls within a recently departed corpse to reanimate it...if only for a short time. Communing with spirits became easier and easier, and the young Fae relished it.

And yet, her role grew into a living nightmare once the plague hit.

Too many restless spirits lingered within the shadows, their tortured voices growing in numbers as well as volume as the disease took more and more victims. She could not escape from the incessant whispers, from the torment these souls virtually leaked as those still possessed by the plague's grip hounded her tribe, baying for blood.

As more and more of her tribe died around her, joining in the maelstrom of lost voices, Haleth knew that the balance between the living and dead had shifted. Determined to stop this spiritual flux, the young Fae journeyed with her remaining loved ones in order to seek refuge.

What she found was more death.

And for her, those who died did not truly leave...they stayed with her, causing her nights to be sleepless and days to drag on. Hearing of a city as yet untouched by this corruption, Haleth journeyed into Light territory hoping to find it...and running into a group of wanderers along the way. Upon learning of their search for a cure, Haleth determined to join them, lending her talents as best she can in the hopes that they can help set these spirits to rest.
