~~I can't breathe. Face deep in sucking snow, he struggled to roll over. Blinking to clear the snow from his eyes, he faced the pale, weak light, squinting. Frosty flakes fluttered from the tired, greyed skies. Heaving, he pulled himself up,and looked around him. Hazy sunlight glinted harshly off the platinum white sheets blanketing the ground and he squinted, straining to see through the blinding lights and whirling snow. Glancing to his left, then right, he realized he was lying in the middle of a field, with dark pine woods looming on his sides. It's quiet, he realized with a jolt. So quiet. The snow seemed to mute the colors, but the wind buffeted him gently. The wind isn't harsh enough to silence the sounds. So why can't I hear anything?Opening his jaws, he prepared to call out for help.
"Kiiiiiiii!!"He jumped, startled, his claws reaching for his throat. He pressed his pads against his neck, and hummed softly. To his surprise, his voice had become strangely raspy, bearing a quality not unlike the harsh cry of a predatory bird. "kiiii!" Softly, a returning cry rang loudly in oppressing quiet of the snowy pines.
A storm black bird emerged from the fluttering flakes, wings as unsettlingly quiet as the frozen landscape. He scrambled to his feet, throwing up clouds of shimmering snow. The bird had arrived with alarming speed, nearly right in from of his whiskers. On instinct, he stretched out an ocean blue arm, claws curled and facing downwards. The bird pounded its wings, slowing its descent as it coasted downwards. Cumulus cloud grey talons gently grasped his forearm, careful not to scratch his scales. Piercing lightning eyes locked with glacier blue ones.
"The Storm approaches", he kawwed, voice low, like the silky rumble of thunder.
With a start, he realized. That's my voice? But... what is happening?
"I am you, River. Wake up. You must tell them.
Tell who? And tell them of what? He frowned, confused. How is he talking to me?
The bird glowered, eyes burning into his.
"Tell those who can hear the Call of the Tidelord. You will be able to recognize them easily. Your abilities are more than adequate."
Abilities? Glancing down at himself, his eyes caught a glow. His underbelly shimmered with potent magic, glimmering like an ice cold ocean. Eyes widening, he turned to the bird, only to see his claws, glimmering brightly. Opening his mouth to shriek, he scrabbled at his throat as no sound came out. What's happeningWhycan'tIspeakI-
"Stop it. You're fine, and you're displacing me! Once you wake up you'll be able to speak once more. The magic will guide you."Storm black feathers fluttered irritably as the bird shifted, before giving up entirely on getting back on the dragon's flailing arms.
"And now you've cut our time short. Sighing, he turned to look him in the eye.
"Listen. You must remember, the Storm is coming. But," the bird twisted his head, so the disconcerting electric eye on his chest could glare at him with equal ferocity.
"You mustn't cower from it. After all," the bird's eye gleamed harshly, like a flash of sudden sunlight upon a patch of clean snow.
"Life's about learning to dance in the rain."~~
