 The fire crackled and danced against the darkness of the camp. It had been a long day in the Coliseum. Diamond and Lucaya slept some several yards away while Kyrian huddled near the fire. A small shiver went through him. It was particularly cold this night. He didn't know how those two could sleep away from such a warm gift. Kyrian sighed and settled, warmth radiating from the modest fire and blanketing him. 'I had better sleep,' he thought. 'Morning comes quickly.' Kyrian huffed and waited for darkness to take him into slumber. After a few silent moments, he heard a faint rustling in some nearby underbrush. Mouse, or something, probably. Pain suddenly sliced through his left leg. Kyrian yelled for Lucaya and Diamond as he shook and thrashed, trying to dislodge whatever had him in its jaws. Panic began to choke him. Why weren't they coming? What was attacking him? Why couldn't he see it?! Kyrian roared and jackknifed away from the fire, scrambling for the cover of darkness. A moment was all he needed, just a moment... Kyrian's breath caught in his throat when a second set of teeth clamped down into his back. He felt a tear, then a rush of warm liquid over his shoulder. Blood ran to the ground in pools too fast to soak into the dirt. Weakly, he called for Diamond and Lucaya again. His vision blurred and he staggered. Another rip, more blood. "Help... me..." Kyrian rasped. His knees buckled and he collapsed to the ground. He couldn't tell how many teeth were tearing at him. Didn't know how many claws he felt digging for his bones. Despair washed over him. This was the end. "Kyrian! NO!" Diamond roared as he and Lucaya came upon the carnage unfolding on the ground. Overtaken by rage, Diamond dove with Lucaya just on his tail. They snatched the beasts off of their comrade, dispatching each of them with extreme prejudice. Short of breath and covered in blood, Diamond and Lucaya landed near Kyrian's lifeless body. Diamond stared down, grief washing over him. Lucaya gasped. "He's still breathing!" she rejoiced, "let's get him to Ava quickly." Diamond nodded and helped hoist Kyrian up onto Lucaya's back. He flanked her as she flew, in case Kyrian were to fall from between Lucaya's mighty wings. They made their way back to their clan's lair with great haste. Gideon met them first. Aghast as Kyrian's conditon, he led Diamond and Lucaya to Ava, the clan's greatest healer.
