He is third in line for the throne of his family's relatively small kingdom, but complications happen. In this time period, sonerith is recovering from a horrible series of Emperors, to the point where everyone has kinda agreed to put an end to imperials - some jut want to prevent them from breeding or hatching new eggs while others are taking a less desirable route and taking direct action. After losing a good chunk of his family to unscrupulous Imperial bounty hunter, he eventually goes mad and takes the "You want a monster I'll give you a monster" route and basically tries to make himself an Emperor.

Actually, in my more modern clan lore, imperials have actually become extinct, and Ashur hold the mythological title of "The Last Emperor"

I mean Ashur didn't last long as an emperor, especially since this happened at the end of a golden age where you had a lot of Imperial Hunters and only a few dozen left to hunt. An overabundance of free hands, you know? But his defeat ties nicely into the story of my clan's founders, so it's an important starting point for my lore.

Yeah, I'm working in a looong pat BoE timeline here. It let me be more-or-less faithful to site lore but still gives me enough wiggle to do some cool things. I'm working in a low-magic setting; it turns out the imperial population and the same mechanic that allowed them to become emperors was responsible for the usable magic in the world.

The fact that in the more modern group magic seems to be coming back is probably not a good thing.
