Unstable Serthis Concoction

her wit is as bitter as the poisons she brews.

When Rhiannon sees something moving in the pile of sludge in the corner, she doesn’t acknowledge it at first. Things often come alive in her magical workings, but if it is violent she is confident she can subdue it, and if it is docile she wants it to show itself on its own terms. She continues her current working–today, a strong-smelling brew that bubbles like broth but, if she’s done it correctly, ought to take care of the leaf beetle problem she’s been having in her herb garden without damaging the plants or killing the toads.

Before long, the little heap of sludge has begun an exploratory meander around the collection of cauldrons that Rhiannon has yet to clean out. It disappears into one of the cauldrons for a moment, and there’s a loud clang as the cauldron tips over, trapping the little sludge-creature underneath it. Still keeping half an eye on her current concoction, Rhiannon listens closely for any sounds of panic or distress, but other than a faint burble there’s nothing…

Until there’s something. A screak as the cauldron shifts, a very brief pause as if the creature is gathering its breath, and, while Rhiannon almost ignores her brew, there’s a drawn-out ppbbththlorp and a puddle of dull greenish goop seeps out from beneath the rim and, with a shimmy, pops itself into a shape that doesn’t quite look like a baby dragon.

Rhiannon hums in approval. “Clever one.”

The dragon-shaped sludge cocks its head. When Rhiannon doesn’t respond, it makes a quizzical-sounding bubbly bloop.

When she still doesn’t make any move to interact with it, the creature stumbles clumsily over to the fireplace next to her, leaving wet spots on the wooden floor from its tail, wings, and feet. It’s a little smaller than most hatchlings, she notes, but it’s a near-perfect mimicry of one otherwise. Although she’s never seen a hatchling quite so…drippy. Well, it’s been a while since her last clutch left the nest. Perhaps hatchlings were always a little slippery. She can’t recall any of hers being this close to translucent, though, she thinks as she watches this one’s big shiny eyes seem to wobble a little as it watches the flames tickle the underside of the cauldron.

It curls itself up into a little pile, gazing at the flames, and after a little while it rests its head on one of its coils, and after a little longer it blinks very slowly, and a little after that its eyes close, asleep. Rhiannon doesn’t disturb it, just goes back to watching her cauldron, and long before the creature wakes up she’s all but forgotten that it wasn’t always there, glimmering in the firelight and rippling as if it were sighing contentedly while it slept.
