Trench wyrms live in the walls of the Leviathan Trench, digging out narrow burrows barely large enough for themselves, and launching surprise attacks against any potential prey that wanders too close. In contrast to many other Spirals of Sornieth, Trench wyrms have evolved to be completely still and quiet while waiting for prey to come by. Some have even been recorded to lie still for days on end as they wait for prey to float by. Their dappled hides help camouflage them against the rocky walls, and their countershading is indicative of the depth they hunt at – lighter underbellies are found near the top of the wall while the darker ones can be found further down the trench.
Investigation of their burrows has revealed that many are highly communal, digging out multi-chambered rooms located deep in the trench walls. It is here that they socialize and breed, though food is shared only with their own hatchlings. Additionally, the entrances to these communal lairs, just like solitary wyrms, are located a set distance from each other, suggesting a fiercely-protected hunting territory. Despite the existence of these communal lairs, however, trench wyrms remain largely solitary. The requirements for a desirable mate seems to be based on how much food they can provide for their hatchlings, leading to many wyrms seeking new mates after their hatchlings have left to make burrows of their own. Nevertheless, many monogamous pairs have been observed, as well as a few polygamous groups – always one female to any number of males.
