Biography

Acandra leaned on the counter and sighed. It'd been days since any merchant had made the trek to her lair. She didn't fancy going out into the wilderness to hawk wares at the Trading Post hub, but it was looking as if she didn't have much of a choice. Her shop was nearly empty, aside from some bird sculptures by the local artist. Even her father, Astriel, hadn't come by with fresh bouquets for her to sell. It seemed as if this was the week time had forgotten.
Despite being the youngest shopkeep the lair had ever seen, Acandra pulled off her job better than some of the most famous wheelers and dealers in Sornieth. She knew what her lairmates wanted, and she knew how to find them at low prices. She struck up some partnerships with local merchants early on, and after a few weeks behind the counter, she could read their faces like a book. Especially that one Spiral from the Fishspine Reefs. She really enjoyed when he came around, but she couldn't put her talon on why...
But it'd been over two weeks since he'd come by, and almost five days since she'd seen the last merchant. What was happening outside the forest? Why wasn't anyone coming this way recently? She knew she hadn't offended the Snapper merchant from last week.
Either way, she couldn't wait too much longer. Give it another day or two, and her profits for the quarter would tank. She knew what she had to do.
Flipping over the "Open" sign, Acandra headed out of the lair center with a large satchel on her back and as much water as she could carry. She wasn't a picky eater and she knew how to forage from her father's lessons, so she wasn't too pressed to carry much food on her journey. On her way out, she passed her uncle at his shrine. She stopped to say goodbye and ask for a blessing on her journey, but she knew his quiet gaze was uneasy. She had always been uncomfortable with Baltar's vow of silence, but this time, it was nearly oppressive. After what felt like a century of blinking silence, he bowed his head and began polishing his pearl.
"Yikes," she thought, "I'm never getting used to that."
After what she could only assume was a prayer from her uncle, she took her leave and ventured out into the depths of the forest. It's not as if the road was arduous or terrifying (which it certainly wasn't. It was a beautiful day and the forest was full of wildlife and flowers), it was just such a hassle for her to close up shop so near the New Moon. Not only had the women of the town come in to see if she'd stocked new gifts for the upcoming Sunblossom Celebrations, but Acandra knew she'd be responsible for finding the decorations for them as well.
With so much weighing on her, it was no surprise that she didn't hear the rustling behind her until she was almost to the halfway marker. In fact, she didn't take notice of the sound until she had seated herself upon the toppled column and opened her water pouch.
It was still light out, and she had recently filed her talons, so Acandra wasn't particularly nervous. Being in her line of work meant dealing with shady dragons far too often, and she knew how to defend herself when need be.
She kept her eyes on the source of the sound, which was coming the hedges just off the road. If she squinted, she could just make out... was that a twilight-colored horn? A charcoal-colored tail plume? If this was a burglar, he was terrible at it.
Creeping closer, Acandra slowly reattached her water pouch to her pack and leaned closer to the ground. Whatever this guy was hunting for must be important, and her sense of curiosity outweighed any fear she should have felt.
Every spine on her body rose one by one until--
A smirched head popped up just inches from her snout.
"Uncle Baltar?!"
Acandra tripped over her own feet and fell backwards in shock. All her life, she had never seen her uncle anywhere but his den or his shrine. What was he doing out here?
As she blinked the stars from her eyes, Baltar tilted his head, stared at her for a moment, then popped back into the hedge and began rummaging around as if nothing had happened. Once she was able to regain her footing, Acandra wandered over to where he was scurrying around.
"Uncle Baltar," she repeated, "what in the world are you doing out here? Shouldn't you be back at the lair wi--" Her sentence was cut short as his paw gripped her mouth shut. He motioned to the side, and Acandra looked where he was pointing. There seemed to be an Alstroemeria Fox nest, but with plushes instead of pups-- a common diversion for when the family was out hunting. Baltar moved toward the nest, gently lifted it with both hands, and Acandra's heart leapt when she saw what laid underneath.
Gilded treasure chests! Three of them!
Not only would she have enough riches to buy whatever she needed from the Trading Post, but she'd have goodies and apparel to spare. Oh heavens, what a lucky day this was shaping out to be! She turned around and began thanking her uncle but--
Wait--
Where had he gone now?
She poked her head up as high as her tall frame allowed, but there was no meandering Pearlcatcher to be seen. Not high, not low, not anywhere.
"Yep," she confirmed as she loaded her pack with the chests, "definitely never getting used to that."
