Eilwen
Cursebringer, the Messenger
_______________________________ "In-laws, am I right? There was one thing Eilwen knew about curses. There’s always at least one hidden under the shadow of gold leaves and one at the circumference of a pomegranate. He would know. He trades in them, the silky smooth exchange of magic and messages tucked into seeds, to later be pruned and carefully watered into letters writ in green veins and purple fruits. He wanders through dozens of empires, thousands of kingdoms and markets to sell his services, making his name known as a green and gold breeze that should carry luck but is merely a messenger for many different kinds of death. It was in one of those many trading stops where he met the little imperial -- still half a child, but then again, so was he -- the nymph-like princess of her mother’s eternal garden nestled in the depths of the Viridian Labyrinth. She had curses and gold leaves etched into her blood, and his breath caught when he saw her, and when she asked him to steal her away he didn’t say no. And then a basket of sliced pomegranates appeared at the windowsill a few days later, glistening red jewels shining in the light. It was delicious. By the time they saw who it was from...it was too late. _______________________________ There were two things Eilwen knew about curses. One. There’s always at least one hidden under the shadow of gold leaves and definitely one at the circumference of a pomegranate. Two. There’s one curled around his spine, right now, hidden under the feathers of his wings where the joints connect. He should have known. He should have known. There were curses hidden in those traitorous purples, curses that leapt from seed to seed and buried themselves in the pit of his stomach. Parting gifts, from mother to daughter to lover. The curse twisted the betrayed parts of him into gold leaf, and then he was laughing and almost crying at the irony (imagine: dying!) but Gwydyr pulled the fruit from him before anything else could happen. And she (his darling Gwydyr, his sweet Gwydyr), she watched her own curse wound up inside her and turn her bones to gold, and then Eilwen did cry, but even then- Together! Gwydyr says, and all Eilwen could think of is how in love with her he is (and how he needs to tell her about Romeo and Juliet and Hades and Persephone and Midas and all those other curses that come with love). _______________________________ Actually, Eilwen didn’t really think about this before, but now that he had: There were three things he knew about curses. One. There’s always at least one hidden under the shadow of gold leaves and definitely one at the circumference of a pomegranate, but that’s not always a bad thing. Two. There’s one curled around his spine, right now, hidden under the feathers of his wings where the joints connect, and there’s one in Gwydyr’s shimmering bones. Three. They can be broken. And he and Gwydyr...they’ll do it together. He’ll wait through a thousand and one winters on that bathhouse on the hill (that has a curse all of its own), by the gods, he’ll wait if it means they can break the curse together. | texttofilloutspacefillout |
