Shade-touched, Lucian studies his affliction in hopes of curing it from himself and others with the help of his best friend and assistant Taliesin.

Lucian was the most Prized of Halogens scholars, his knowledge of history and the Sunbeam Ruins unrivaled, but he was thirsty for knowledge that was forbidden to him. He wished to learn of the Shade. So, in secret, he studied and learned of the Shade. However, his curiosity was his downfall, and he was infected with the shade, turning his silver coat grey, and then pitch black, his mane dripping like ink, his wounds knitting themselves together with tendrils of darkness.
Try as he might, he could not hide his ailment, and fled, before he could be discovered. This would be in vain, as the City's seers already knew, and he was pursued by the mercenary Apollo and her assitants, Ravage and Riot. He was eventually captured in the Abiding Boneyard, and was almost executed on the spot, before a travelling Blight and Erra witnessed him being attacked, and came to his rescue.
He slowly recovered from the brutality of Apollo and her henchwomen, however, his leg was badly broken, and healed badly, leaving him in need of a cane to walk.
