Many legends speak of the black dog. The church grim, the black shuck, Cerberus at the gate of Hades.
No wonder. The howl of the wolf at night was always a reminder that, tame and break and domesticate what you will, the world is still wild and blood-hungry.
The hellhound, however, is a different sort of fear.
The hellhound is white and searing hot, a bolt of targeted rage molded into the shape of an untamed searchdog, more heat-seeking missile than beast. It is the bane of the debtors, those that owe their due to hell but would rather run than face it.
To cowards and would-be tricksters, to those that fancy themselves clever enough to outrun the forces of hell, it shows itself as white-hot flashes in the peripheral vision, edging closer the faster you run; dry, warm breath that never leaves the small of your neck, a surge of static the makes the minute hairs on the skin of your arms prickle.
The black dog is the fear of the vague and unknown, but the hellhound is the fear of knowing exactly what will happen in the next five minutes. For the first four, you will shudder, flinching away from every block of the traffic signal across the street reflected blurrily on the rain-glazed asphalt, see fangs and a slavering maw in every city light.
The hound will catch up to you, eventually, and the police that find you an hour later will call it an accident, an electric surge, a heart attack maybe.
But still, you keep running.
