"Mkhai!" Nassau's voice rang in the air, in the silent, silent air.

Clutching her egg, the dragon held it tighter, closer to her body, growling softly. "You won't take it."

A vision of Mirrikh flashed through her head. Promise me you'll run and never get caught, he'd said. I'll come be with you as soon as I can. Take care of our egg... I love you, Nassau. And Nassau had cried, tears streaming down her face because she knew the her mate, her beloved Mirrikh, would not return.

And he knew it, too.

Nassau held her egg closer, daring to peek down over the tall spire she was standing on. "Mkhai," she snarled. "Come out here, you cowardly beast. Look me in the eyes and tell me that imprisoning me would do me any good."

No response.

No doubt Mkhai had caught Mirrikh as well. She couldn't see him in this vast network of prisons, but there was just as high of a chance that Mkhai had killed him, right on the spot, just out of spite.

The brothers had hated each other for so long. Nassau could remember her Mirrikh's face as he watched, horrified, as Mkhai ruthlessly slaughtered war prisoners. Dragon after dragon fell, mercilessly, at his feet, blood pouring onto his robes.

As he saw that, Mirrikh understood his brother's bloodthirsty ways. Nassau knew that her kindhearted mate would never kill another dragon. He said that he would kill for her, would die for her, but Nassau would never let that happen, not that it would. That was the reason she chose him - because he loved her and loved every living thing.

Bitter tears burned as they slid down her cheeks. Soon Mkhai would come to confiscate her egg. And all her last memories of Mirrikh would be gone. Lost forever, just another grain of sand swept about the ocean floor, as the ocean waves churned above.
