Biography
Aether was a fey creature. She didn't speak the day Helvetica brought her to Garden from the Lair by the Sea. She stared at the leaves blowing in the breeze and didn't move from the nursery where she was placed. The other hatchlings tumbled and bumbled around her, but all she did was watch the breezes blow past.
Tahoma asked Helvetica, "What do you smell in her? She's such a pale, quiet little thing."
"I smell sharp magic, with the bite of coriander, and the sweet syrup of roses. She smells of dreams, and visions. She will guide us in this labyrinth, when we get lost."
Tahoma looked at the young skydancer, and wondered.
*******
"A great danger is coming," Aether warned. "I can here it on the wind. Many will be lost to us."
*******
Two great plagues later the clan was smaller and leaner and much more wary of trader's bringing gifts. Tahoma had been lost during the first plague, burning herself and her healing gifts out. This left Aether the clan's 2nd and Helvetica's main mystical support, a role she felt very strange about.
*******
The week they gifted her with gene magics, she was quite certain she didn't deserve them. She had taken on her role as WInd's priestess, true. And she had the favor of the Cloudkeeper bear, who followed her everywhere. But to be gifted with a transformation of all her genes, she was quite certain she hadn't earned it.
"You have, my dear" Helvetica assured her. "You found the cure for the 2nd plague, you toiled in the garderns and the stills, brewing politices and tinctures to cure us." And so Aether looked at her splotchy coat, and rattled her newly grown spines, and wondered.
