Harry Peglar
Captain of the Foretop on HMS Terror

Harry Peter Peglar was born in Westminster London either in 1811 or 1812.

Sometime around 1820 - 1821, Peglar joined the Royal Navy. The first ship he served on was the HMS Magnificent. Not long after that, Peglar left the Magnificent and joined the crew of the HMS Rattlesnake when it left for the Caribbean. In 1829, Peglar worked on the HMS Talavera. On April 3rd, 1834, he left the Talavera and served on the HMS Gannet. During this time, Peglar presumably met James Fairholme. In February 1838, Peglar was discharged from the Gannet and joined the HMS Ocean. In December 1839, Peglar was transferred to the HMS Wanderer. During his travels on the Wanderer, Peglar traveled to America and returned to the Caribbean in 1840, was involved in anti-slaving operations off the African coast, a journey to India, and service in the Opium war before he was discharged on June 27, 1844.

In the spring of 1845, Peglar joined the Franklin expedition as the Captain of the Foretop aboard HMS Terror. Papers found with a skeleton near Cape Simpson suggest that Peglar was alive after the ships were deserted.

Peglar is well known in the history of the Franklin expedition because of the Peglar papers. On May 25th, 1859, Francis McClintock and his search expedition discovered a skeleton near Cape Simpson. Among the possessions found with the skeleton, was a wallet that contained various papers. They are called the "Peglar Papers", because among the papers found, were Peglar's seaman's certificate and a rendition of Bryan Proctor's poem "The Sea" published April 21st, 1847.
