Biography

Mage | Citadel Guard | Soulless

Nero was a permanent citizen of Unsol -- "The City of No Return". It is called such because those who choose residence there are not allowed to leave for long due to its guardian spirit's need to draw on the mana of its residents. Those who stray far for too long start to feel effects of fatigue, social withdrawal, and distaste for food and drink. These are signs that one should return home to Unsol, or be remotely possessed and forced to do so.

For pearlcatchers, this is just an inconvenience. Their pearls allow their soul to be held safely while they are possessed. For other breeds however, it's seen as the end. Once a dragon that is not a pearlcatcher is possessed, its soul is immediately dissipated. From that point on, they become an addition to the citadel's emotionless, enthralled army of golems. They lumber back to the city with what the fortress watchers call 'ghoul gait'. It's a rigid and dedicated walk instrinsic to a dragon that was consumed by Unsol. Often time when a loved one leaves the citadel for a period, their family will wait on the 'widow's walk' to watch for sign of their return. More importantly, their manner of stride. Children aren't typically allowed to join this vigil for obvious reasons.

It is a common practice for a dragon returning to perform erratic and humorous gestures to reassure their loved ones watching from afar that they are okay.

Nero was a hunter that strayed too far. Not by choice, but by being kidnapped by a territorial, unmarked clan out in the frozen southern wastelands. No amount of explaining appealed to them; they would not have his pleas regarding their safety, or his soul. In the end, he returned to Unsol -- and that clan is no more.

Rumors exist that if one can make it in time out of the spirit's reach of possession, they are freed from Unsol. It is unknown how the spirit can reach out so far, but it is known that once it reaches its target, it saps their mana permanently into its pool of reserves -- which in effect means the soul of a dragon as well. Its reach is vast however, and it is heard that those who have tried to escape had made it leagues away only to be returned as a golem. The farthest anyone on record had gone was the Sea of a Thousand Currents. This was deduced from bite marks that lined up with recorded dental structures of water flight fauna, as well as remnants of kelp and sand in their scales and claws.

Those who plan to make the escape do know one thing -- if they can get out of reach, they must never venture within range again. Their essence is marked by the spirit, and it will know, even should they skirt its edge, if they step claw within its reach again. A few dragons have managed to make it out okay, unbeknownst to those they left behind. There is a specific barring spell one can permanantly affix to their body to go under Unsol's radar, but it is very rare and hard to obtain, not to mention extremely taxing on the body. Those that discovered it dare not risk the wrath of Unsol by bringing it to light, so they simply vanished after making use of it.

There is an agreement between the spirit of Unsol and Acrypia. Residents of Acrypia can move about Unsol and take up temporary residence without falling to the effects of the city. Vice versa, a dragon staying in Acrypia after taking up residence in Unsol is allowed to stay there much longer than they would outside of both cities. This agreement between the two spirits is due to their related origins, and that by allowing their residents to move freely between the two, commerce flows. For Unsol, it is a way to keep its citizens from growing restless and wreaking havoc.

No outsider entering the city is forced to become a citizen of Unsol. A traveler that is stopping by must face the spirit in the deep underground well where it resides to seal the deal. A traveler that overstays their welcome without comitting will be forced out by golem guards, and not allowed to return for a period of time. While the rules of the spirit might sound horrid, a lot of dragons have reason to enjoy Unsol and stay. Many have family lines dating back ages within the capital, as well as the fact that Unsol provides protection for its residents due to its heavily guarding nature. Many dragons are the descendents of vagabonds and those who were being hunted for various reasons. For an outsider to harm a citizen of Unsol, the spirit inacts instant death upon them. For an insider to kill another insider, they will be tried according to the spirit's judgement. This is due to the fact that Unsol would have already lost a source of magic; to lose another via vengeful smiting would be a waste of the mana its survival is contingent on. Despite having some wisp of morality, Unsol is mostly pragmatic in thought.

Dragons who were born within Unsol are citizens by birth, and don't get to make that choice. They do however, have a perk that allows them to venture out of the city for longer periods of time. An Unsol native can leave for roughly three months, whereas a dragon made a citizen of their own volition can at most go a fortnight. There is speculation around the reasoning, and a common legend references a consort of Unsol from long ages past.

"Bonds of blood are inherently stronger than words of tongue."

It is unsure of whether that statement is to be associated with the trustworthiness of a bargain versus being born into Unsol as "family", or some power derived from the implied "sacrifice" of a newborn dragon being unable to voluntarily make their pact with Unsol.
