_____
THE LEVIATHAN.

There’s a glimmer of iridescent scales beneath the surface of the lake, disrupting the waters and breaking the calm like shattered glass. Seeing movement, the small band of dragons surrounding the shore stumble away from the water’s edge. It is clear they are not warriors from the way their inexperienced hands shake as they tightly grip their weapons. Desperation guided them to this place rather than a thirst for adventure or danger. No, this was out of necessity.

“This is the moment we were waiting for!” A haughty captain spits above the crowd. He is not like the others. With one hand, he clasps the golden hilt of the cutlass that rests lazily at his hip, and with the other hand, he flips a silver coin. He is a Skydancer dressed with the jewels of wealth, yet one who lacks the poise of royalty; he is a pirate, a bandit. His nails are dirty beneath those plundered rings. He continues on, snarling: “Stand your ground, you cowards!” Some members of his crew turn their weary heads to reply, but before they draw in breath… they stop.

Something rises from the abyss. First spines breach the waves, then gargantuan fins. A massive head emerges from the water, followed by a colossal neck and broad, spiked shoulders. The leviathan’s shadow is cast over the crowd, blotting out the half-sunken sun above. He blinks droplets out of his deep blue eyes, and as he speaks, he reveals three rows of pointed teeth. “Travelers,” speaks his low, sharp growl, “why do you trespass on the sanctum of our Lady?” Beyond him, in the center of the lake, a statue of a human woman stands tall. Though lifeless, she seems to be watching. The monster is, too, with his scrutinizing gaze.

The leader of the group steps forward, his heavy coin purse jingling at his side. “We come to request safe passage to the altar,” he stammers, “as we would like to pay our respects.” He raises his chin in feigned confidence, exposing the impressive golden amulet that is hung ‘round his neck. The beast’s eyes travel downward, and sharpen like daggers. A deep rumble emits from the leviathan’s throat. “I see a hunger for wealth in your eyes, and all the riches in our Lady’s altar. You have revealed your purpose, thieves.

He waits for no response. Enormous wings erupt from the water as the beast roars and thrashes his mighty head, sending a huge tidal wave crashing against the shore. Half of the intruders attempt to run, while the others turn to fight; but all are swept into the waves by a surge of stinging claws. The leviathan’s discerning eyes fall on one final trespasser: the captain himself, scrambling like mad towards the wall of ivy and bramble that has closed shut and trapped him inside the grotto. He tries with his knife to saw away at the thicket, but to no avail. “Die with your crew!” Bellows the beast, as his jaws snap around the pirate’s throat - all the dying dragon saw was teeth.

The desperate cries of the thieves are cut short. Heads disappear beneath the churning water. And then, as it was before, the shrine is lulled into a quiet calm.

SHIGA - TEETH.

x. No one is entirely sure of how long Shiga, the leviathan of Val Vistaria, has resided in the lake at the Temple of the Bleeding Sun. An aquatic Water element dragon, he lives in a trench at the bottom of the lake, and surfaces only to grant or deny entry to the altar. Shiga is always in the depths, watching through discerning eyes and guarding his Lady’s shrine. Some theorize that he is bound to the altar by magic or duty, while others believe Shiga has been cursed to remain there by some force. Whatever the case, something keeps the leviathan tethered to this place - and he is the reason it still remains unharmed.
