Rose grew up in a huge colony of Fae that was led by the Matriarch.
Everything that happened in their lives was depended on the moods of their leader, which meant that a majority of the colony lived in poverty.
Her parents didn't mind. They made their tiny nest out of the brittle sap that was left after the higher ranking members of the colony were done with their nests and lived a modest life.
But Rose was not happy. She saw the hunger in her parents and friends eyes when they watched the Matriarch and her inner circle feast on the fattest insects the gatherers have found, she saw the fear in the shiver of their crests when the Matriarch decided to punish one of them again for something trivial. And she hated every minute of it.
She can’t count all the times she asked her parents to leave all this behind and start again somewhere new, but whenever she brought it up they scolded her, reminding her that this is where they belonged.

“Brainwashed”, her friend Puck called them and maybe he was right about that. So she did what every other Fae of the colony did and kept her head down and her crests lowered in obedience.
That is, until the day Puck vanished.
She knew he would never skip their weekly meetings on the borders of the territory, and yet she waited way after sundown for him and he never came.
Alarmed, she flew back to the heart of the nest and asked whoever she could find if they have seen Puck, but she was just met with cold annoyance.
And then, finally: “The Matriarch came to get him”, a young dragoness whispered to her in a hushed voice. The Matriarch? Her heart stung with fear, what could the Matriarch want from him?
For weeks she waited, anxiously listening to the rumours and hushed voices that circulate the colony every day. But no one knew what happened to Puck. He remained lost to her.
And then he suddenly showed up at their nest. His crests flared happily, but his eyes not mirroring the emotion.
“Glory be to the Matriarch Rose, how have you been?” She flinched at those words. Glory be to the Matriarch…? He hated the Matriarch. Is someone watching them? Can he not speak freely?
Questions continued to race through her mind, while Puck talked about being brought before their gracious leader who offered him training in the palace and how sorry he was he could not reach out to her.
Lies... Rose thought. She agreed to meet with him the next day in the hopes of getting some real answers out of him. Maybe they needed to be away from prying eyes for him to open up to her.
“WHY?!”, She screamed as the bulky guards grabbed at her. Puck stared at her with cold indifference. He betrayed her…? Made her spill all her doubts about their way of life and then had the guards jump her for treachery? Brainwashed She thought bitterly, fighting against the guards clawing at her wings.
All around her the other Fae have gathered, watching her struggle. Above them the Matriarch smiled with cruel delight.
She spotted her parents and called out for them, but her mother turned away and her father growled at her, crests flared: “We didn’t raise a treacherous creature like you. You are not our daughter!”
Yowling with pain, she let her mind sink into the shadows. She never did believe in gods and deities, but she lost everything. There was nothing left but that. Mother of Shadows, help me...
She heard a surprised scream as the darkness swirled around her, swallowing her up completely.
When she came to she was alone. She looked around to find herself in a big room completely made from dark stone that seems to amplify the dark around her. Purple glowing crystals dipped the room into a murky, yet comforting light and she could see the moonlight shine through a dark door on the other side of the room.
In front of her stood an altar adorned with intricate runes and pictures showing the birth and reign of the Shadowbinder. On top stood between countless black and purple candles an Onyx Idol of the Deity herself.
”I have saved you” The dark eyes of the statue seemed to say ”You are free... But should you decide to stay… you will have my blessings… You will be the master of this place… you will raise the lost and unwanted… and you will send them to me.”
