A pirate’s life was a hard one. Always running from the law, competing with other pirates, and just surviving in general. Other dragons had the comfort of being in their clans with friends and family. Their clan leaders controlled the laws and what they couldn’t do, but they were almost always safe in their beds and homes. This was not so true for pirates. Everything about their life was unsafe but for most of them they didn’t mind. That was part of the adventure.

Aoife’s parents were the same way until they made the decision to leave the pirate ship they had grown up on. They would be considered traitors and deserters but they were prepared for that. Being a pirate was their passion, but the both of them wanted time away to grow a family and their relationship. Possibly even start their own pirate gang with their children. They would teach their children all the skills they had in order to prepare them for the world of being a pirate.

Not long after they escaped the ship, they had Aoife. It was clear just by a few days after she was born that she was a happy and bubbly dragon. Aoife always had a smile on her face for any stranger or friend. Her parents also noticed that she seemed to have the aptitude for being a pirate. She would lie her way into getting free candy from strangers as they walked the nearby docks of a new clan they lived in.

Aoife seemed to grow older very quickly, or at least that was how her parents felt. They had been teaching her how to steal and trick and swindle from a young age. It wasn’t long that she became so bold as to try and steal from them. It was playful of course, nothing of real value stolen, but it reminded them that she wasn’t a little hatchling anymore. Aoife had even been known around their new clan as a disturber of the peace. It made them proud to have a daughter with such talents as them but also a little sad to see her grow up so soon. Aoife was also happy to have such a reputation. She took a lot of pride in her abilities even if they were seen as bad to others.

Proof of her age was when Aoife started her own merchant stand right by the docks. Most of her items for sale were either stolen, gotten through trickery, or just found laying around. Aoife would often play a game with strangers which dealt with cards and guessing the correct one they had. It was like magic, only that she was in complete control the whole time and would get her money or item one way or the other. Aoife’s excellence in the game got her premium products from rich dragons just getting off the docks. Though, she was never rude with other dragons. Aoife loved meeting new dragons, it gave her more world experience. In general Aoife truly enjoyed other dragons. Despite having bad intentions, she never wanted to truly hurt or insult others. Because of this, the dragons on the docks saw her as a playful, young merchant ready to bow down to your every whim if you would just pay her some treasure or gems in return. Deep down, though, she knew it also allowed her to fend off her loneliness.

She soon realized that living a life full of stealing from others wasn’t one that allowed for relationships or friendships. Aoife was too adaptive to things around her. She could never really be herself around others, only adapting to what they wanted her to be. Her parents often praised her for her ability to change up any situation and adapt as if she was already used to it. However, Aoife found it to be one of her worst and best qualities. It was good in her line of work, but never any good for making friends or having solid romantic relationships. Though, she did have lots of fun with the pirates in her clan. They always appreciated her business and gave her some of her items for sale when they went out. They weren't very close, but it was nice to have some sort of connection with like minded people. Often her favorite thing about being a merchant with a bad reputation and being friends with pirates was messing around with the authorities. They try and try to get her and her friends with anything they’ve got, but she prides herself in being elusive and ready for any challenge they throw at her. The same for her pirate friends.

Despite any loneliness she felt, her life wasn’t all bad. Her merchant business was booming and she was on her way in learning new things. Books she took and gotten through her card game gave her knowledge she would’ve never known on her own. It was difficult for her to make any connections, but she still had her family, her pirate friends, the books, and her customers. She also had enough money to sustain herself. So much so she draped herself in lavish clothing. Any loneliness she had was often put second to the joy in her life that was being a merchant. Her life was near perfect and she would keep it that way in a heartbeat.
